What California undergraduate program would you recommend for a student interested to eventually attend law school?. Other recommendations would be appreciated!
As a high school 2016 graduate, my daughter has excelled academically, athletically, and ECs.
Her basic scores are:
GPA:
3.86 unweighted
4.05 weighted - will graduate with 4 APs (11, 12) & 4 honor classes (9, 10)
Any major (engineering or science for patent law), high college GPA (law schools do count A+ grades as 4.33), high LSAT score, low cost to save money for law school.
Law School admissions, at present, are more weighted towards undergraduate GPA and LSAT scores. Which undergraduate school you went to matters but GPA is extremely important. So going to a top caliber school like USC, UCLA, Stanford or Berkeley would help but plenty of applicants from less highly ranked colleges get into top law schools as long as they have great grades and LSAT scores.
In other words, she should go to a school she feels she’s a good fit for as her feeling comfortable enough to thrive there will be more important to getting into law school than where she goes to college.
Those four schools I mentioned might be a bit of a reach for your daughter (although not out of the question). If you are a California resident then most of the UC schools are excellent, especially when given the in-state tuition.
It doesn’t make much of a difference for Law School admissions. If you daughter has high GPA and LSAT score she will get into a good law school. Less people are applying to law school now and even fewer high achieving students are choosing to attend law school.
