Undergraduate program rankings

Are there any rankings available that rank undergraduate schools based on a specific major they offer? For example, is there a list available of the top 20 molecular biology programs or top 20 chemical engineering programs, etc?
Because even though Princeton or Harvard may be ranked at the top of the university rankings holistically, I highly highly doubt they're number 1 in each of the majors they offer and would like to see which schools offer the strongest programs in the concentrations I'm interested in.

I have the same question, mainly speaking for political science/ international relations… though base from what I understand… the top universities are safe to stay they score well in all areas if not most.

Yes, both Gourman (The Gourman Report) and Rugg’s (Rugg’s Recommendations on the Colleges) produce such rankings, although I’m not sure that either are available for free online. Check your local library or buy the books online via Amazon.com or another retailer.

It seems like Gourman is quite outdated (1997?) and Rugg’s is not available for free. It does seem like its available at my public library, and I’ll check it out, but are any biases I should be aware about with Ruggs?

USNWR does have rankings for undergraduate engineering and business programs. They have overall program ranking, than ranking for specific fields (finance, aeronautical engineering etc). They also have rankings for broad areas, such as arts and humanities, social science etc, of all the universities in their best universities in the world ranking.

^
Can you give a link? I didn’t notice it, I will re-look myself.

I checked out Ruggs and it is not helpful at all. It doesn’t rank schools based on the quality of that specific major they offer. If it is possible, does anyone know a list of the top molecular biology programs?

Not exactly what you are looking for with regards to undergraduate molecular biology. This list is a start:

1**)** Rockefeller U.
2**)** UCLA*
2) Weill Cornell (medical school)
4) UCSF (graduate school only)
5**)** Columbia
6**)** Johns Hopkins
7) UCLA*
7**)** Duke
9**)** Harvard
10) Baylor (medical school)

Regardless of ratings, though, you need to do your own research. There may be some little-known “gems” of schools out there who are great at chemical engineering, that get overlooked.

And using US News for rankings isn’t always the best idea:

[University of Florida President Bernie Machen places his school among the most distinguished universities in the United States. Other Florida universities get poor ratings. | Gainesville.com | The Gainesville Sun | Gainesville, FL](http://www.gainesville.com/article/20090616/ARTICLES/906169915/-1/SPORTS0102?Title=Machen-rates-Fla-schools-low#)
While potentially this guy’s over/under-rankings would be offset, places that are larger/more well-known (i.e. places with larger graduate programs), will likely be ranked higher. Eg: Brown is likely underrated on US News, because fewer university presidents come out of Brown than other ivies, because there are only 2,000 Brown graduate students, whereas places like Columbia have closer to 8,000,meaning more presidents are tied to Columbia then Brown, meaning Columbia’s ratings go up.

There’s another thread right now all about this: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/college-search-selection/732180-uf-president-cooks-usnews-rankings.html

Amazing. Mini must be on vacation. I cannot believe mini has not weighed in by now.

If you don’t know what I’m talking about, do a search on “mini” as poster and “Gourman” as keyword. Or just the words “Gourman” and “fraud”.
