Undergraduate research?? Is it important?

Hi ,

I'm currently a freshman at Northeastern University is Boston studying mechanical engineering. I applied for a certain scholars program which allows freshman to participate in undergrad research, and I was accepted.
However, it's halfway through the semester and I;m not liking the research. It's boring, and uninteresting to me (maybe because it's mainly a computer/electrical engineering project), but also the word research just makes me feel horrible inside. I had experience with research in high school and i also didn't like it then.

But basically what i want to ask is, is it worth it to go through the misery of doing research if I don't plan to go to grad school for engineering? I;m confident I'll graduate with enough experience in the field since Northeastern offers a co-op program, so I'll finish school in 5 years with 1.5 years of work experience, plus I'e got a few other extracurriculars on my plate and a decent GPA. I thought it'd be good just to put on my resume, but I;m finding that I don't like it and it may not be worth it.

What do you think?

Probably shouldn’t do it after this semester if you won’t go to grad school. Keep in mind, though, if you do well at this research, you can still get good recommendations for use in scholarships or other things that ask for letters of recommendation. There is at least one plus side to it!

Focus on internships rather than research if you aren’t interested in grad school.
