Undergraduate Research

Has anybody done undergraduate research? My aunt told me to see if I could do undergraduate research instead of finding a job during the school year. Does anybody know how much it pays and what things you might do for it?

I have done it. Its a great experience. What you do varies wildly, but it usually pays $8 - $10 an hour it seems. It is also VERY good if you eventually decide to do grad school.

I did it for a short while. I would recommend it over getting a more typical student job, like fast food. The pay is usually better than working said typical student job and you’ll actually get a lot more out of it than just a paycheck.

Hey bone what engineering degree are you studying? Im studying EE. What was the experience that you had when you did your undergrad research. Something else Im trying to figure out is if an internship is better than doing undergrad research.

I was mechanical engineering as an undergrad. I worked for two different professors over the course of college. The first one I was really just a lab helper because I wasn’t there long enough before the grad student I worked with graduated for me to get deeper into it. Then I switched groups and worked very closely with the grad student on that project. I did more than just help out there. I was actually able to run the experiments and help design and upgrade them. It was a great experience.
