@jym626 Big time. Grad school too I think?
Yes, both.
First college S2 and I visited was St. Mary’s/MD. Public honors LAC, free boats for students to take sailing. Neighbor’s S just graduated and loved it. 80% of applicants accepted.
+1 on UMBC – very good for STEM folks, friends of S1 went there – one is now a pediatrician, one’s a physicist, and one’s a software engineer for a consulting firm. UMBC gives merit $! Used to be more of a suitcase school, but they have made real efforts to improve weekend activities (and beating UVA in the first round of March Madness didn’t hurt, either). Championship chess team!
Endicott College in Beverly, MA is another school you don’t see mentioned much. Knew one kid who went there and he had a great time!
@natty1988 Good mention. Just talking with a recent 2019 grad. He told me about their excellent hotel and restaurant management program. His goal.
He specialized in private clubs and resorts and had a job lined up immediately. Is very excited.
Also being on the north shore gives you access to NH coast, Cape Elizabeth in MA and Boston with and a short car ride.
@milgymfam My nephew and girlfriend both went to UNR and had a wonderful time. His girlfriend even graduated early. My stepfather taught there in the 60’s. Much easier and cheaper to get into then a UC and we have friends whose D graduated early from UNR and liked that it felt much less crowded then a UC. Students may have to look past the “looks” of a campus. My D lives in Reno and loves it. Most people I know who don’t like Reno are only in one part of the city and don’t spend a lot of time there…but everyone is entitled to their opinion.
I’d say UNR would be a good place for students who can’t get into the UC’s or want to avoid the crowded CSU campuses…
Westminster College in Utah is a small liberal arts school that doesn’t get much attention on CC. My nephew’s high school friend went there and had a great time!
Carroll College in Montana is another school you hear little about. Don’t know anyone who has attended, but great for kids out west who want a smaller school and maybe don’t have super high stats.
University of Idaho is an increasingly popular choice in my neck of woods! NAU, University of Nevada-Reno, University of Montana, Montana State, Boise State, University of Wyoming, and Colorado State are all western public schools that don’t get a ton of attention here, but are great choices!
@privatebanker cool! Sounds like a great school!
University of La Verne in Southern California is another school you pretty much never hear about on CC. Neither one of my kids was at all interested in it, but it’s worth checking out, especially if your kid doesn’t have perfect stats.
University of Redlands is another school worth looking at. Same with Whittier College. Great for kids who don’t have perfect stats!
Some other California schools you don’t hear much about on CC:
Mills (women’s college in NorCal)
Dominican University of California (small Catholic school in the bay area)
Notre Dame De Namur University (another small Catholic school in the bay area)
Point Loma Nazarene University (religious university in San Diego)
California Lutheran University (located just north of LA)
University of the Pacific (located in Stockton, CA): This is a great school, but you don’t hear too much about it! It’s actually pretty selective, but is def a hidden gem!
@natty1988 we have a good friend of the family/ friend of my daughter who went to Carroll and loved it. I don’t know what her stats were in high school but I do know that the merit aid there was the draw (plus the small size and the location). I think it ended up being the most affordable LAC she got admitted to.
Some good kids i know picked Gonzaga in WA state. Given its all the way on the other side of the country, there had to be good reason.
@washugrad sounds like a good place!
St. Martin’s University in Washington State sent my S an email. I don’t know anything about it and I’ve never really seen it mentioned on CC, but maybe someone could chime in! Could be worth looking into!
I’m interested in detailed experiences or anecdotes from known but seldom discussed schools too. Location facilities coursework vibe activities and finances
Examples for me
Drexel Temple Duquesne Marquette DePaul
St Binaventure Canisius Niagra Santa Clara Gonzaga. Public unis like ole miss and big sky schools. SD North D Hawaii Arkansas Kentucky Nebraska Tennessee to name a few.
I would say Ursinus in PA. I don’t hear much about that school at all, and it seemed pretty nice when we visited.
Rochester was mentioned earlier…I agree that while it is prestigious and selective, you really don’t hear a lot about it. I’m friends with the college counselor at the school I work at and she said she always has to remind kids about Rochester…she suggests it and they’re like “Oh yeah, Rochester, I forgot about that school.” It’s odd…just sort of flies under the radar!
John Carroll U outside of Cleveland has a good local rep. Catholic school. Has an auto admit w/o MCAT program to a medical school. A group of Ohio colleges had programs of that sort that may be of interest to the avid premed
Some of the Florida public universities like University of North Florida, South Florida, Central Florida. Florida Atlantic University and Florida Gulf Coast University are some others. Let me know if I’ve forgotten some.
My D has a friend who went to Coastal Carolina University and raves about it! My D has another friend who went to University of North Carolina-Asheville and still goes back and visits!
Whitworth University in Spokane, WA is a Christian college that is popular with a lot of families at my (Presbyterian) church.
@cptofthehouse @natty1988 @Corinthian (aka the RI State motto and flag!)
Any chance you could expand on any of these schools?
Really nice to know any first hand experiences and second hand feedback to give us all a sense of their personality facilities and academics. Thx
Appalachian State University in North Carolina is another great school that you don’t hear a ton about, at least in my area. But, my H has a co worker who went there and has had nothing but good things to say about it!
@privatebanker which schools specifically?
With some of the schools I’ve mentioned I haven’t been there, but I’ve heard good things about them or know people who’ve attended and had a great experience.
