Underrated/Overrated artists

Who are some of the most overrated artists today?
Who are some underrated artists?

Name however many you want, but state whether you think they are overrated or underrated and why. This discussion is open for any musical genre!

Stephen Malkmus is the most underrated. From Pavement to his solo work he’s always phenomenal. Most people haven’t heard of him, but as Stephen Colbert said in a recent interview with him, “You’re universally heralded as a genius.”

Overrated:
Ninety percent of what is on Top 40 stations
Coldplay-Honestly, I just find their music boring.
Paramore-I do enjoy them, but their popularity is completely disproportionate to their talent. Their lyrics are decent, but their music sound like they were recording a 4 year old banging two guitars together for half their stuff.
U2-Their good songs are amazing. Their other songs are not. I think it’s just the inconsistency that bothers me.
Kanye West. Need I say more?

Underrated-
I could go on for hours, but here’s what I’m currently listening to:

Something Corporate/ Jack’s Mannequin- bands that cover very different stages in life, but Andrew McMahon deserves way more recognition than he gets. He’s one of the few piano players who is also truly has the rock star presence. If you’ve seen either band live you know what I mean. Everything from the ridiculously catchy to painful realism, all the while sounding beautiful.
Third Eye Blind-One of my best friends said it best “That is the prettiest song about spousal abuse I’ve ever heard”
Modest Mouse-Not for everybody, but I challenge anyone to hear Float On and not be happier afterwards. Their other stuff is just so different from everything else out there, including all of their other songs. It’s the feeling that matters here.
Cloud Cult-Listen to “Take Your Medicine” some of the best sounds every made by man are on this track. Then listen to Your 8th Birthday, about the singer’s son who died at age four. Listen to him scream his son’s name and try not to have his emotion actually transmit itself to you over the speakers.
Rise Against-Honestly, one of the best bands out there today. They have the musical ability, they have the lyrics, the emotion, the attitude. It would be punk except their too goddamn talented.
Alex Day-He is mostly a youtube musician. His blog is very popular in the UK, but if you listen to his music (most of it you can listen to for free) you’ll hear possible the best lyric writing of someone in our age group. (He’s 20)

Over: *Katy Perry/i
*Lady Gaga/i

*Taylor Swift/i

Under: *Soulja Boy Tell 'Em<a href=“'nuff%20said”>/i

 • Justin Bieber* [Besides his status as my 3rd favorite Canadian, his voice is not that bad (and I want to pinch his widdle cheekies)]

If Kanye West got drunk and told you you didn’t deserve your Grammy in the middle of your acceptance speech on live TV, you probably wouldn’t be fond of him either…

You find Soulja Boy underrated? Lyrically? That’s very interesting.

wow

Anyway, I’ll do underrated:

Anti-Flag - Their name and lyrics are probably pretty polarizing but the actual music is great punk

cKy - Amazing alt rock band that just doesn’t seem to get much air time. Their first two albums are riff-tastic.

Clutch - They’re not necessarily underrated, just underplayed. Amazing rock band from my fair state of Maryland. Their genre is kinda all over their place, but their last few albums have been very blues-rock and I love 'em.

Filter - The Megadeth of industrial IMO… people who are into industrial rock will know who they are, but people who just listen to the radio won’t. Whereas Nine Inch Nails gets airtime even on DC101 (local rock station that mainly plays things like Three Days Grace).

Machine Head - Excellent thrash metal band. They should get way more recognition and air time. Their album “The Blackening” is so ****ing good.

Ah heck I’ll do one overrated:

Oasis - I like a few of their songs, but Liam Gallagher acts like he is the greatest thing to ever happen to music and he also acts like the reincarnation of John Lennon.

Underrated:
Angels & Airwaves

I wouldn’t say he’s a talented lyricist so much as he is (unintentionally?) hilarious. Comedy is a plus, for me.

I can certainly understand why Swift may not be a fan of Kanye’s…I guess it’s my personal distaste for her music and persona that cause my ‘hateresque’ evaluation.

If we’re going for unintentional hilarity I now understand why you said Justin Beiber. :D

Stephen Malkmus is a genius, but let’s face it - he’s no Connor Oberst. I’m just sayin… it’s not 1994 anymore, DUH!
oh and did I show you my new miniskirt leggings combo?

Did someone just say Soulja Boy and Justine Beaver are underrated?! They are two artists that should have never released music in the first place.

I wouldn’t say that… Soulja Boy yes but Justin Bieber can actually sing and has a decent voice. I just wish his entire career wasn’t a joke.

i’m renouncing my Canadian citizenship because of that little kid. His horribleness outweighs Rush, that song by the Barenaked Ladies, maple syrup and that Canadian sniper who had the world record for longest range kill.

I’d say one of the most overrated Top 40 singers of the pop genre is definitely Kesha. Although her songs are incredibly catchy and fun to listen to while partying, I feel like she cannot sing and utilizes auto tune way too much to be legitimate at what she does. She is hilarious though, if were talking about comedy haha!

I also renounce your Canadian citizenship for Bieber. He disgusts me.

@ Gina: Lol. J-Biebs is also quite funny [but again, not that bad–he’s actually fairly gangsta. I read in an aol news article (the most trusted source of info) today that he ‘beat up’ a 12-year-old kid during a game of laser tag. If that ain’t (the Canadian version of) hood, I don’t know what is.]

@ DCH: Embrace the Biebster…that is all.

@ Bballgrl: I’m with you on the Ke$ha thing: catchy, crappy, and comedic.

Underrated: people you’ve never heard of
Overrated: everyone named in this thread

Hahahha Oh btw @arachnophobia I read that same article but then recent news said that Bieber actually had nothing to do with it lol that would be hilarious though!

aaaand the thread has been infected by the hipster
