Understanding IGETC and assist.org?

I'm almost done with my first semester at CC now, and I've been forumlating a transfer plan. I visited my counselor but she kind of just rushed through the appointment and circled off a bunch of classes and sent me on my way. I'm going to go to another counselor just to clarify things, but I also heard this site is great. Sorry if I come off as ignorant, but there's some differnces between the IGETC form and the print out from assist.org. For example, assist.org omits the physical and biological sciences and languages where the IGETC lists them as requirements. I'm guessing that assist.org is fulfilling major requirements where the IGETC fills gen ed and CC graduation requirements? I don't really have a specific question, but I would appreciate it if anyone can offer me any insight or help me navigate these things. Once again sorry for coming off as ignorant... thanks in advance!

Your guess is correct. IGETC is a general education pattern, while assist.org will show you the specific major prerequisites for your intended major, articulated between your community college and the different UCs/CSUs. Keep in mind that courses that you take for your major, if they are listed on IGETC, also count towards your general education.
Completion of IGETC is not required for transfer, but there is a 7 course pattern that is required, so try to get those done first. Definitely find a counselor who takes the time to explain everything to you. My first appt with a counselor was the same as the one you had, haha. Good luck :)

Assist.org is an excellent resource to view which courses you need to take for a certain major at a certain school. For example, Psychology at UCLA the major prep calls for Psych 101, BIO 101, Statistics, Phil, and Chem. That is specific to a specific major at a specific school.
IGETC is a gen Ed pattern accepted by the UC’s. Some require it. You can usually satisfy some of the IGETC requirements with some of the major prep requirements. For example, the five classes listed above for UCLA’s psychology major prep were all on the list for my igetc requirements.
All majors will be different. I found the counselors in my transfer center to be of better assistance than those in general advising.

assist.org is your major requirements, it varies school by school, even if they’re in the UC system. UCLA might want you to take 3 different courses, while UCSB wants you to take 6 courses. A lot of time those courses overlap

IGETC (Intersegmental General Education Transfer Curriculum) is the UC wide general education course curriculum that MOST transfers have to take (some majors, like engineering students are discouraged from taking it, check with your counselor if this may apply to you).

So yes, there will be differences between them. Your community college will have an IGETC-like form for their AA degree, and Cal-states also have their own version.

Some tips for Community college
-Pick a major early, you’ll have to finish the pre-reqs
-Pick your schools early, you’ll never have the time to finish the pre-reqs for every UC, narrow your selections down to a top 4 or so (maybe a top school like LA and Berkeley and some backups)
-If you took AP classes in high school, and passed the tests with a 3 or higher, speak to your counselor about that. They’ll be able to credit them towards your IGETC, and some UC’s (Davis) let you credit them towards your major pre-reqs

 • Look into TAG. TAG (Transfer Admission Guarantee) guarantees you admission to a certain UC. If you get a 3.2 GPA (some schools may require a higher GPA for certain majors) and have at least 30 units the year you apply, you can get a guarantee to every UC except LA, Berkeley and San Diego (San diego is ending their program in 2014). It’s a great system, and you know the results of your guarantee before you’ve even applied to the schools.

Best of luck, CC is a great route and will save you plenty of money.

Thanks for the help everyone. I just got back with another counselor worse than the 1st one I saw -_-, but what are you gonna do? Guess I’m in this alone. One more question: do remedial courses affect your transfer admission/GPA? I had to take a remedial algebra course before statistics, I got an A anyway so it’s mainly just curiosity. I saw only transferrable courses appear on your TAG application so I’m wonderingif they even see anything else.

Remedial courses do not count towards your UC transferable gpa, but you still have to list them on the application. You can add them yourself on the bottom of the app.

IGETC exists to allow CC students to complete general education requirements without worrying about different general education requirements at various UCs and CSUs.

Most, but not all, majors at UC and CSU campuses accept IGETC in substitution of the general education requirements at the UC or CSU. If you do not complete IGETC before transfer to a UC or CSU, you will have to complete the general education requirements specific to the UC or CSU (your CC courses could articulate to some or all of them).

So some classes required on the IGETC are not listed on assist.org’s list of classes? When I add up the credits for the classes listed on assist.org (only the ones on the left), i get like 41 credits, i thought we got around 30 credits a year? It says they are all required and i did not add the “or” classes. Im just really confused now because i recently discovered the IGETC and other stuff.

@DarkDubzs

Assist.org lists the articulation agreement and the major prep courses. It also lists some General Education Patterns such as UCB Breadth. IGETC is an (almost) universal breadth pattern between your CC and the UC.

Basically you want to complete both, major pre-reqs and breadth.

@bomerr What if I only want to go to a CSU. Im aiming at attending Cal Poly Pomona after CC, and i will do all i can to increase my chances of being accepted. Do i need the IGETC for CSU’s or do i just need the Golden 4?

For CSU; Golden 4 is just an ADMISSION requirement BUT you still should do a General Education (GE) pattern. You can either do the CSU pattern or IGETC for CSU (basically IGETC + speech class - foreign language class). I would recommend doing IGETC with both the foreign language and speech class that way you will be ready for either UC or CSU.

Basically if you don’t finish the GE before transferring, you will have to waste time and money doing that at university instead of focusing on your major courses.
