Understanding the MCA plus Calculator

This is not what the rep or school has said. It shouldn’t be this confusing these poor kids. And some more rigorous schools don’t weight honors but they are way more intense and time consuming. Leaves room for interpretation.

Agree with all of that. Kind of wish my kid just filled it out and just designated honors, without looking at the instructions and asking me. I think he took around 8 of them, with “honors” right there in the course title.

Same!

OOS Honors is not recognized as Honors for the extra points in the CSU GPA calculation but it does not exclude these classes from being considered for HS rigor. If she had that many Honors and AP classes, at least for the CSU GPA calculation it is moot. It is capped at 8 semesters so 4 AP’s would meet that requirement anyways.

I assume the classes are labeled as Honors on the transcript so you list them that way on the application but do not use the drop down for Honors.

Edited: My sons attended a CA HS since we are residents. They both had 3 Honors classes not recognized by the UC’s and CSU’s but they were still listed as honors on their transcript and on their application. They did not use the drop down for the Honors designation.

So to be clear, a set of eyeballs (or a computer) will note “Honors” in the course title when considering rigor, even though the courses could not be designated honors in the app? (Sorry for being confused, but I was assuming the weighting cap was their way of quantifying rigor.)

Again the Cal Poly rep stated she should have put in honors for OOS. So this is conflicting information as well as completely confusing…

Unfortunately you cannot cater to one school unless SLO is the only school you are applying to on the CSU application which is possible. I would definitely email admissions about the discrepancy.

Is anyone aware of how community college classes (not dual enrollment) count in the MCA score? Would it be considered part of the academic section (even though it was not dual enrollment) or in the extracurriculars? I have had a high school counselor tell my son that a community college course will boost his CP application immensely but I cannot figure out where it fits in the MCA calculator.

CC classes count the same as dual enrollment. They are in the academic section. If a student takes one semester of statistics at a CC, it’s counted for two semesters in the Math area. One CC semester of theater appreciation course counts for two semesters in the arts area.

I don’t believe that’s the case. DE classes are taken at the HS and count as HS classes even though college credit will be awarded. CC classes are not taken at HS. I believe the latter is the only one to count double. @Gumbymom would know for sure.

As for boosting CP chances, only if it allows a student to max a rigor section they otherwise would not.

@spaceaquarium is correct. According to the CSU GPA calculation information, the CSU’s do not distinguish between DE or Regular CC courses. If a DE/College course fulfills an a-g course requirement, then a 1 semester class is counted twice in the GPA calculation or 1 semester = 1 year long HS class.

From the CSU apply website:
** What is considered a college course?
The CSU considers a college course, any course that will be reported on a college transcript. This is regardless of where the course is taught and if it is used for high school credit. A college course taught on the high school campus by an approved high school faculty member is still considered a college course.**

Hi there- any hint or buzz that rigor max points would increase past 750? Looking ahead to senior year- worth it to add another class to get to 800/850?

Hi:

Just out of curiosity, does Cal Poly consideration make any difference between a 4.0 from a top CA HS and a 4.0 from a bottom CA HS ?

Thanks

Absolutely no reason to think this.

Possibly. If the “bottom” school is a Hayden Partner School, the applicant would get a boost.

That’s assuming the MCA is the same and that Hayden Partner Schools still exist.

Note that college courses, while they can fulfill an admissions subject area requirement (certain courses can even fulfill TWO years of an admission requirement such as world language), they are ONE grade (and transferable CC course in the areas of English, foreign language,
history, laboratory science and advanced mathematics
such as advanced algebra, math analysis, trigonometry,
precalculus, calculus) can get a single-grade bump.

From the CSU website on reporting College courses:

  • College courses used to meet CSU “a-g” requirements can also result in honors points. But no more than eight honors points may be awarded. A semester grade in a college course should be counted twice. For example, if you earned a B in a biology course at a community college, you would count this B grade twice in your GPA calculation.

does AP computer science principles included in D (a-g course list) considered as extra year science?
thanks

From the SLO website:

Lab Science (Area D)

Two years of laboratory science are required, including one year of physical science and one year of biological science. Four years are recommended. Classes must provide fundamental knowledge in two of the following: biology, chemistry, or physics. A yearlong interdisciplinary, or integrated, or earth and space science course can meet one year of this requirement.

You can contact admissions and ask. The definition of Area D on the UCOP website includes the above statement along with this, but better to get the information directly from SLO admissions.

Computer science, engineering and applied science courses can be used in area D as an additional science (i.e., third year and beyond).

in cal state(csu) application we need to enter eighth grade courses(a-g) as 9th grade( yr and school)
1 question: middle school had trimester system so how do you enter grades in 9th semester system

2 question: will cal poly count this also in GPA calculation (9-11) and it will agian lower gpa as number of units lowers the gpa
am i misisng something. also i dont think we have eight grade transcript.
