Understanding the US college system

Hi,

I know that an associates degree is a two-year degree and allows you to go to work.

So what is a bachelors degree and why would a person want to do it?
Is a bachelors degree only for those who want to earn a professional degree like Medicine or Dentistry?
If not what does a person do with a bachelors degree?

What is a masters degree and what does it allow you to do?

Also what is a majoring and how does it work?

A bachelor’s degree usually entails at least four years of study, and most workplaces require a four-year (bachelor’s degree). In most colleges, the first two years are spent fulfilling general education requirements (math, English, science, etc.), and the last two years are spent fulfilling major requirements.

A master’s degree usually entails four years of study (bachelor’s) plus an extra two years of study on top of that. If one receives a bachelor’s degree in English, then he or she may choose to go to school for another two years and get a master’s in English. One normally gets a master’s in the same field or a similar field of study.

As I said, most employers require a bachelor’s degree to get the job. A master’s degree usually entails the recipient to more job opportunities because he or she is more qualified than an individual with a bachelor’s, who only completed four years of study. For example, an education major with a bachelor’s could only be a teacher, but he or she with a master’s could be a principal or college professor.

Majoring is what one wants to study in college. Students choose between a variety of subjects and spend four or more years studying one subject to get a bachelor’s and/or master’s.

At one time, associate degrees used to be sufficient enough to get a decent job, but most employers require at least a bachelor’s to gain employment.

Associates degrees may be sufficient for some kinds of technician jobs but a Bachelor’s degree will give you more opportunities.

Sorry, I wrote this before the questions were answered above. ^^^^^^

An Associates degree (AA) is a program of career preparation, typically at a Community College and is a stepping stone to a university for a Bachelor’s degree. It is typically two years of study, so at this level, people with an AA prepare for vocational careers in electronics, automotive repair, culinary arts, etc.

**A bachelor’s degree is a professional degree that typically takes 4 years to complete. A bachelor’s degree is the minimum level of education needed to begin a profession like teaching, engineering, business, nursing, etc.

It is not, however, enough years of study and practice for the fields of Medicine and Dentistry. **

What is a masters degree and what does it allow you to do?
A masters degree is a graduate level degree that is a specific study of a field that demonstrates mastery of a field. Some professions require Masters degrees; some jobs want their professionals to have more training like engineers, social workers, speech pathologists, school counselors, marriage and family therapists, etc.

Also what is a majoring and how does it work? A major is a field of study: engineering, finance, biology, chemistry, physics, nursing, education. You pick a major to study in your bachelor’s program.

Medicine requires a bachelor’s degree, and special testing (MCAT), then acceptance to medical schools and hundreds if not thousands of hours of practice under the supervision of hospital staff, internships, training in multiple areas of medicine, and medical boards testing. At least 8 year of study. Dentistry requires similar training.

All of these questions can be googled or you can ask your teachers.

Does your school not have this information??
