Undified scheduling

This february I am hoping to audition for as many schools as possible. I am planning on attending the NYC Unifieds. But it sounds like a lot of schools require a four hour time slot which leaves a total of 6 schools max over the 2 days they take place. Can anyone share their audition experience at unifieds and any strategies there are when it comes to scheduling and fitting as many schools as possible. Has anyone ever attended Unifieds in more than once city?? I would really love to auditions for close to 10 schools !!

When my daughter was at Chicago Unifieds last year, I think we did 6 or 7 schools and that was over a 2-day period. I found the auditions to be very well organized and on schedule. We actually had some down time in between so I do not think 10 over a 3-day period would be pushing it. Just get your applications in early as I believe some schools will accomodate you as far as morning or afternoon, etc. Don’t hold me to that, just remembering we got our time slots early for schools like Webster, CCM, because the application was in by end of September. Some schools also do dance calls at different times, so the audition is split up.

My D did 7 auditions at the LA Unifieds this past February over the two days since all the auditions were in the same hotel. You need to find out where all the auditions in NYC are being held. I remember people saying in the past that auditions were not all in one place and that is why you need to leave plenty of time to get to the next audition.

My D did NYC and LA unifieds. It worked out very well for her. She auditioned for 10 schools over those two weekends (two in NYC were not part of unifieds, but held auditions at the same time). We did two locations because she thought 10 auditions over two days would be pushing it too much. I think with very careful planning you could schedule five per day, but mentally it might be a bit much. There is also the risk of being sick the weekend you have all your auditions.

We also chose to do it in two trips rather than do 10 in Chicago (three days) because it meant missing less school. We were coming from Colorado. We flew out on Friday, auditioned on Saturday and Sunday, and flew back Sunday night. Made for a tiring but fun weekend.

Don’t put all your eggs in one Unified basket! You never know if you will wake up with a sore throat or cold on the morning of the auditions. Try to space out at least a couple of your auditions, if you can. My D did 2 local auditions in the fall, 6 at Unifieds, and one more in late Feb. She felt that she did not do her best at Unifieds due, in part, to being smack in the middle of a 2 week run of her HS musical. Her voice was tired. But she aced the other non-Unified auditions.

megpmom’s advice is well worth noting. This board is replete with unfortunate experiences of students getting sick before unifieds and having very disappointing auditions. While unifieds have some benefits to them, at the very least schedule some on campus auditions on other dates if for no other reason than to be prudent.

I just have to second the Megpmom and MichaelNKat comments. When S did NYC Unifieds he was so sick by the time day 2 came around that he had to pull out and try to reschedule his CCM audition. He got into all schools he auditioned for outside of Unifieds and neither of the two he was able to do during Unifieds. Unifieds is a wonderful concept and more cost effective but the stress of preparation for and anticipation of multiple auditions may make the young performer pretty vulnerable to all of those “bugs” floating around in winter!

In order to stretch out the auditions over more than two days if you really want to (or need to) do them all at NYC Unifieds, note that several schools have auditions in NYC prior to the Unifieds official days. Several schools had audition dates on the Thursday and Friday before. Check NYU and Emerson for sure. But check the others as well.
