My husband and I have both been unemployed for over a year. We are "older" and in fields with very, very little job activity so we see a bleak job future. But we do have some stock investments and home equity from many years ago. To our surprise, our son received NO grant money from the highly-endowed, need-based college that he was accepted at ED. Does anyone have advice on how we can go back to the college and ask them to reconsider. What is our best approach?

I’m assuming you supplied info based on last year’s taxes which already showed you unemployed? If not, that would certainly be key info to talk with them about. If so, it sounds like you have considerable assets and colleges will expect a chunk of them. Never hurts to try though.

I remember reading recently from another post or news maybe. On the FAFSA, if you are a “dislocated worker” and you have < $50,000 income, your asset is not considered. Perhaps the CSS Profile is also used and your assets are considered. Talk to the college, explain your situation and see what they have to say.

Did you receive any large severance payments in 2009?

It does sound like the school used the info from CSS Profile in a different way than FAFSA did (which gave you an expectation of receiving “some” aid.)
