Unemployment and Financial Aid

One of my parents has just been laid off and we have lost our total income into the house. Under these circumstances, paying for college(going to U. of Florida) just got a lot harder, and I was wondering if I could correct my FAFSA to indicate now I have $0 income? And if I did change it, would they probably give me more money?

You can’t just change FAFSA. That was based on 2011 income, which hasn’t changed.

You need to contact UF and tell them what happened and ask them what you can do.

As Mom2 says, you can not change FAFSA. The 2011 income has not changed and FAFSA requires you to report that income. You can ask the school for a special circumstances adjustment to reflect the loss of income. However, most schools will not immediately make such a change, but may do so if the unemployment situation is still ongoing in a few months. It will really depend on the school’s policy for handling such situations.

Good luck.

This is something that the financial aid officers have to determine. It is decided on case by case. Let them know. There may be a waiting period before they will make any changes to your classification, if they will at all.

For schools that do not guarantee to meet full need, and UF does not, the only change may be in what the federal government monies you can get. Perhaps it means you are PELL eligible and/or that some of your Stafford loans will be subsidized. Getting more university funds is usually a long shot, However, you should let financial aid know so that they can tell you what to submit for a bid to change your parent’s status to a dislocated worker.

Hopefully your family will be able to replace the lost income. I went though this process and the school was able to make some accommodation for the loss of income. However, they did follow up in November and and because the lost income was less that originally thought they backed out some of the additional aid and added that to the next semester’s bill. Still I was grateful for a little help in a time of need.

Thanks you for the help! I will be contacting UF’s financial aid office on my situation and see what they can do.
