Have other people experienced this? My daughter goes to a well respected girls private school that always does well at college admittance. This year however, girls who should have gotten into Yale, Stanford, etc. -- including valedictorians, Siemens semi-finalists, published researchers, legacies, etc. are all getting deferred. Whats going on?

The baby boomlet- many more students applying to the same competative colleges for a limited # of openings.

All those "other" geniuses that do early stuff at Harvard and Princeton all got in, except many schools know that those students will probably choose Harvard or Princeton so they're giving many people second chances.

Yeah, I think that seems to a good explanation.

According to WSJ, this yr there were many more ED applicants than previous yrs. Many schools only admit a certain % of the class in ED, thus they will have more deferred or rejections at this point.

First of all, being deferred is not the same as being rejected - many of them may well get in during the RD round. Because of Harvard and Princeton no longer having early rounds, Yale's EA applications were way up this year, so of course many more (3,000+) were deferred than in past years. In addition, being a valedictorian, legacy, or even a Siemens semi-finalist is no longer a guarantee of HYPSM admittance, nor has it been for a few years.

Princeton will regret eliminating ED...many of those kids applied to Columbia and Yale and will go there now because of ED acceptance.

only Columbia, Yale's is early action. and most of those students did early action and not early decision for the most part.

"...should have gotten into Yale, Stanford, etc...."

There is no "should have gotten into Yale, Stanford, etc...." anymore. The "should have" days are over and done with.

I agree there is no should have gotten in. Stanford rejects over 50% of the apps with a perfect 2400 on the SAT, so there really is no should have gotten in except in ones mind. Don't worry though they usually end up where they're suppose to be anyhow.

Very well put.

I agree, there is something wrong with your logic!

not to mention, I believe there are far more girls applying to college this year than boys.

It's so hard to get into the HYPSs these days. 50%+ valed. rejected, high % of perfect test scores rejected. That's why the "please chance me" threads are superfluous. Unless you're an athlete, URM, legacy, VIP, etc. the acceptance rate can be as low as 5%. The schools can throw away an accepted class and still fill the class w/ as talented kids.
