Hi guys,

I think this new thread will be helpful to not just me but also to everyone else in here. I was wondering if anyone (people who have transferred or haven't just yet) has experienced the unexpected mistakes during their CCC plans. The reason why I am asking/saying this is because recently, I was one step away from making the biggest mistake of my life. I "assumed" an English course (English 1B) would satisfy an area under IGETC and it ended up the other course (English 1C) was the one I should've taken. I found out 2 weeks after the semester had already started and was fortunate enough to enroll into that 1C course.

I planned my CCC courses way before I entered my local CC, and I thought everything was flawless until that day. Anyways, so my question is, has anyone experienced anything similar to this? After what happened, I felt insecure everyday. "Is this wrong or is that wrong," I often ask myself.

So if you guys can share your previous experiences, not only it'll help me out but it'll also provide assistance to others.

Thanks,

In order to take English 1C, you needed to have taken the Physical Science requirement or English 1B. Also IGETC is not what some transfer students take for a path to fulfill GE's. Most schools will accept you if you fulfill part of the IGETC (I've called the admission officers at all the UC's to verify this/ except Merced, I don't want to go there). IGETC is just a recommended pathway for community college students to fulfill their GE coursework. Colleges such as UC Berkeley do not really look into IGETC in fulfilling their GE requirements.

I hope this helped.

MakeBank, he wasn't asking about the English classes, he was just telling us about his unexpected experience. And IGETC DOES help a good deal when applying to all the UC's. Of course it depends on your major though, a business major wouldn't want to spend too much time trying to finish IGETC over their pre-reqs.

Of course there's always unexpected mistakes. I make them all the time lol. I'm actually in the same situation as you are right now. I took English 1B at one CC a year ago and once I started attending another CC, I thought the English 1B class would fulfill IGETC but it turns out I had to take English 1C too. The 1B class didn't articulate over, strange I know. So now I'm taking English 1C for Spring XD

Trust me, I planned everything out too before I started but you will always have to start making accommodations and work with them. Many people change majors, don't finish some prereqs, can't add into classes, do unexpectedly poor in a class, or some unpredictable situation arises. I made a lot of mistakes during these past two years (it would take too long to post them all) but I'm still transferring this Fall.

Don't dread on what you should have done, you just have to keep going! I wouldn't say you made a mistake, it was just something you were unaware about, like me. It's not like the 1B class you took was useless anyways. It's still a GE and it will still bring up your GPA just like it did for me. You're taking 1C now and still on path. Don't sweat it!

Ya, I'm applying for CAL as an Econ major so IGETC is needed. It just frightens me that one simple mistake (if I hadn't caught it) would've ruined all my hard work... sigh!

i have totally came across many unexpected mistakes, even when i thought i planned it all out. i almost made the same english mistake as you too. and i personally don't trust counselors, they don't know what they're doing. now, i just call the school i want to transfer to, its so much easier and you get a solid answer. and at my cc, apparently, my japanese ap score doesn't count for "foreign language" so yeah.. just check everything lol

Thats strange Calster_Reno cause usually you get a form of all the courses that meet a certain IGETC requirement for a specific section. Not sure if you ever got one of these at your CC.

My advice for anyone is to check your requirements (IGETC and major pre-req at the beginning and end of every semester). I have friends who couldn't transfer on time because they assume it was ok to take course A for the requirement instead of course B. When in reality they must take course B. So checking often really helps to save you some trouble later on.

I'm glad to see that you saw the mistake early on.
