UNF Admissions Now Open for Questions

Hi All! We're excited to be part of the CC community. If you have any specific questions about the University of North Florida that you'd like our resident experts to answer, this is the place to post.

My son has been accepted to UNF, NC State, FSU, Stetson and Auburn. He will be prusuing a degree in mechanical engineering, although he originally signed up as an economics major. His ACT and grades earned him a scholorship from each university, with Auburn paying for everything.
My question for UNF is: Your ME degree seems like a good one, but why should he choose UNF over the other schools, especially Auburn and NC State, which are nationally ranked programs.
I like the smaller size of UNF and its location, but I am worried that he will be left searching for a job after graduation since he did not attend one of the larger university’s programs. What is the status of your co-op program and do you have any stats on placement/salary after graduation. Thanks.

I’m glad to hear UNF’s ME program is on your radar. You have already touched on one of our distinguishing features which is our commitment to provide personalized attention and small class sizes. These features also contribute to an environment where our students have the opportunity to get involved on the ground level in research projects as early as their freshman and sophomore year – a sharp contrast from many large research institutions where these projects are typically reserved for graduate level students. This experience helps our students solidify their passion for the engineering trade early on, then gain the experience necessary to compete for positions upon graduation.

UNF is deeply rooted in our local community, and as such, many of our students are hired by Jacksonville-based firms. To read more about what some local businesses say about our engineering graduates, our engineering website has some great quotes here: [UNF | School of Engineering | College of Computing, Engineering, and Construction](http://www.unf.edu/ccec/engineering/welcome/index.php)

I am not immediately certain of job placement rates or starting salaries, although I’m sure the department itself has more information on that matter.

Best of luck to you and your son as you make this important decision!

UNF,

If there’s a cancelled application for a transfer student, does the office still send out a “decision” letter along with updating the application status page as “decision letter sent”.

Hey there! Good question! Yes, we will notify you of your cancellation via e-mail. If you cancelled your application and have not received an e-mail, please give us a call or send us an e-mail to make sure your records are correct. admissions@unf.edu or 904-620-5555.

Hi UNF,

I am a lower level CC transfer that applied last month. I have been checking mywings daily to see if my admissions status changes. Do you know if that will change before I get the official accepted/rejected letter, or do I just have to wait for the mail? I ask because today it changed from saying decision not made to complete, awaiting decision. I don’t know what this difference is and am eager to find out if I got in.

Thanks for your help!

Hello! The “complete, awaiting decision” status means that we’ve received everything we need to make a decision and your application is now in the processing stage. It should be just a few short weeks from this point. If you’d like to check up on your status personally, please feel free to contact us: admissions@unf.edu or 904-620-5555. Thanks so much for your interest in UNF and good luck!

When will we find out about Merit Based Scholarships? Will they be mailed at the same time as the admissions decisions or later in like March?

Hey fayth93,

Decisions regarding Merit Based Scholarships will be released on February 1, via letter.
Thank you for apply to UNF!

I have some questions about how early I am able to apply to UNF. Right now I am a junior in high school, and my expected graduation is May 2013. I was just wondering how early I am able to apply, I really have my heart set on UNF. I want to study Athletic Training and/or Physical Therapy. I have already looked up the course information on physical therapy. I have a 4.0GPA, I recently took the PSAT and scored a 161 overall, which I think equals out to a 1610, and my latest score on the ACT was a 24.(I am planning to take the ACT again, and my mom wants me to take the SAT) I was wondering if I had a good chance of getting into UNF.
I was also interested on how high I needed to get my ACT and SAT scores to get a full ride scholarship to UNF.
Any information would really help. Thanks :)

Thank you very much for your interest in UNF!We are very excited to receive your application! We will start accepting First Time in College Applications for the 2013 terms on July 1st, 2012.The required materials are: application, $30 application fee or fee waiver, high school transcript, and SAT and/or ACT test scores.(We will need the grades through the completion of your junior year). It sounds like you are on the right track academically!Congratulations on all of your hardwork. The average academic profile for First Time in College Students joining us this fall term was a 3.8 recalculated GPA, 1210 SAT (not including the writing section) or a 26 ACT.These are averages and not minimums for admission consideration. We accept both the SAT and ACT, and we encourage students to send all test scores that may be available because we can take the best combination of subsections. Please feel free to contact us if you have additional questions about the application process as the time approaches. Our office can be reached at 904-620-5555 or admissions@unf.edu.

Will decisions be put on the website tonight at 12A.M? Or is it some time tomorrow?

Decisions for freshmen were released on myWings at midnight December 15. Mailed packages should begin arriving today. Good luck!

I have some more questions about scholarships. Does UNF give out any full ride scholarships, and if so, what do I need to get this scholarship? (like grades or act/sat scores). What other scholarships can I get that pays for a lot of the college tuition and dorm expenses?

Thank you for your interest in UNF! Take a moment to look over our scholarship page and then let us know if you have any more questions. [UNF - Admissions - Scholarships](UNF: Scholarships)

How many Blue and Gold & Blue and Silver scholarships are awarded each year? Also is there a minimum SAT required for the Blue and Gold? In the brochure it says 1200 but on another area in the UNF website it doesn’t mention a minimum SAT score. Is there no minimum SAT score required for the Blue and Silver? Thank you.

Hi UNF,
What are the mean and median GRE or GMAT scores and GPA’s for those accepted into the MHA program?
Can the MHA be started in the spring or only in the fall? When is the earliest I can apply for a 2013 start?
And finally, I finish my undergrad work at the end of August but my degree will not be conferred until November 15th? Can I apply with a transcript that is not showing degree conferral until my final transcript is available?

Thank you!

We award based on funding, so the number of scholarships awarded varies each year. The minimum for the Blue & Gold is 3.5 recalculated is 1200 SAT / 25 ACT. The minimum for Blue & Silver is 3.0 recalculated GPA, and there is no minimum test score. These minimum criteria may be changing next year, but this is what was used for this year’s awarding. Both of these scholarships are competitive, which means they also required an essay submitted by the posted deadline (which was November 18, 2011).
