UNF Education?

Hi, I'm a sophomore at the University of Florida and my sister is a senior in high school who has her mind set on UNF. She wants to major in early childhood education, and since I do not know much about UNF I can not give much advise. Does anyone know how the education department is at UNF? Also, I've heard that UNF is a huge commuter school, and that most of the students are from Jacksonville, this worries me slightly because I do not want her to be stuck in a dorm by herself, and not be able to meet people. Thanks for any help!

Hello!

We’re excited your sister is interested in the University of North Florida! Our education program is one of the best around and involves a lot of hands-on work in the community. Did you know… more than 75 percent of the College of Education and Human Services graduates take either new positions in local schools or are already employed by school districts upon graduation? More than 25 percent of newly hired teachers in Duval County are graduates of University of North Florida!

UNF has been called a commuter school in the past, but this is changing. With the 2012 academic year comes exciting new changes. Not only will we see the opening of our Biology building, fitness center and dining hall, but in the Summer we’ll also be welcoming the first freshman class that will be living and dining completely on campus. Our first year experience will ensure that new UNF students get plugged into a vibrant residential life, forge relationships with a diverse group of peers and build a strong academic foundation.

I hope that you’ll also get responses from students currently enrolled in the program so you and your sister can get a better idea of what we’re all about. Until then, here are a few links your sister may find helpful.

The University of North Florida is a rapidly growing institution of higher education, not just in Florida but in the nation and internationally. The College of Education and Human Services has outstanding teacher education programs and has won national awards for its urban partnership schools. As an education major, the college does offer international experiences in the form of TLO (Transformational Opportunity Learning) experiences and mini-internships. We have cooperative programs with both Plymouth and London England, Belize in Central America and Honduras. Any advisor in the Advising Office of the College of Education and Human Services would be more than happy to meet with anyone considering UNF as their institution to become prepared as an outstanding teacher in our state, nation or the world.
