Most of the the school I applied to required a 100. Can anyone tell me by how much can this kill my chances? Does anyone know someone with similar situation who still made it in? Thanks guys

This really sucks! Did you already submit it? I suppose so because it’s too late to retake it (though I am taking it in 3 days). My guess is that it won’t hurt you significantly but it might influence there decision. I cannot imagine, however, that you will rejected because of the TOEFL if you have an otherwise very strong application.

Thanks for replying. Yes I submitted my applications and ordered score reports for TOEFL previously. There is nothing much I can do…
Just 1 mark below. How unfortunate! I

If you are that close to the borderline, could you take a year off and work on your English?

Some international students will come to the US and work a summer or winter job to get their English skills improved.

Also you should double-check that 100 on the TOEFL is required, not just recommended. If the latter is the case, you could be okay if you demonstrate your English skills otherwise. MIT for example has 90 minimum but 100 recommended.

It depends on the school…
Many US colleges, specially the most competitive ones (Harvard, Penn etc.), don’t set a minimum and basically say “Required” when it comes to TOEFL. Although, they usually point out the fact that they mostly accept students scores with more than 100 …
But if a college says that they have a “minimum” score for TOEFL and that is 100, you probably will have to retake the test…

Again, it really depends on the school. You should contact them to see how strict their policy is…
BTW, it is not very uncommon to waive the TOEFL with good SAT I/ ACT scores.

99 is close enough to 100 that if your application is strong and above most other applicants’ (which as an international, it should), it won’t matter very much… UNLESS that TOEFL score was the only score you could present (ie., no SAT, no ACT, no AP, no national boards…)

Thanks everyone for replying. I hope this will not yield an auto reject.
MYOS, I did submit SAT scores and 3 subject test scores and my grades were okay. I also studied in an international school which means some schools would waive the TOEFL requirement. But they will still see a 99 and they clearly say 100 is the minumum. This is why I am nervous.
