UNH PACKAGE Is it what they say it was?

Hello, I'm so confused about this financial aid package. I was wondering if you may help me out. I have talked to the financial aid office and they have told me I have received the best Aid i could possible get.

Federal Pell Grant-$5500
ACG-1st year-$750
Federal SEOG-$2250
UNH Non-Resident Tuition Grant $10000
University Opportunity Schol.- $4000
Federal Perkins Loan-$2000
Direct Subsidized Loan- $3500
Direct Unsubsidized Loan- $2000

Total for the year is $30,500

My enrollment is for my first year At UNH. How much would i be paying for a year? Would I just be paying my loans to attend to this school? Is this a good quality package? My EFC is 80. Much help would be appreciated...uhhh so confuseddd

Never really understood whats the difference between Subsidized and Unsubsidized loans.

They’re giving you $22,500 in grants and scholarships- money you don’t have to pay back (although it looks like $750 is only for your first year.) which leaves $8,000. You’re getting $7,500 in loans. Your EFC is 80, and there’s a difference of 500, leaving you with a $420 gap. You should be able to earn that much over the summer (which is pretty good in terms of a gap amount), but keep in mind your loan amounts may increase later. Even if they stayed the same, it’d be at least $30,000 in loans. I don’t think that that is that bad, but I don’t know what you’ll be doing for a job in four years.

I’m surprised that they gave you $14k in institutional grants, plus more in fed grants.

What are your stats? I’m guessing that they are strong for the school.

It looks like they are covering everything except the $7500 in student loans. The unsub loans means that while you’re in school, the interest will get added to the loan.

It doesn’t even look like they expect any work-study or summer contribution.

However, you should try to work some to eliminate that $2k in unsub loan

Congrats, that is as about as good as it gets for out of state kids at a state school. There is $7500 worth of loans but everything else does not need to be paid back. You’ll need to be alittle cautious for years 2, 3 and 4, but if you can work and save money in the summers and maybe work alittle during the school year you might be able to stay on top of everything. You should check with the finaid office about the non-resident tuition grand and make sure that will be given each year and also read the fine print on your scholarship to see what kind of GPA you need to keep and if it will continue for year 2,3 and 4…

Thanks everyone I really Appreciated the help. I finally understand what kind of package I may have gotten. My plan is to major in Biology and hopefully apply to a Physical Therapist Program someday. Im going to take all of your advice about the future in the 2nd third and fourth year. Hopefully theyre not trying to sucker me into their school with a good financial award then increase it later on.

Mom2collegekids- My grades are around a 3.3 Gpa range. I internship with Speacial Education and take a tech Program for Allied Health. I believe thats why they may have given that much in grants?

Thank you everyone

Good financial aid package, compared to recent other threads students were left to take out 20k loans a year, at their state school some students were offered that much in loans. Eventhough your out of state you manage to have a affordable aid package.

I do agree, have to be cautious that the school will not spike your amountof loans during your 2nd, 3rd or 4th year. Since you seem to have a loan amount your curious about (7k) only to imagine your 7k to go to 9k and the next 10k-13k would be devastating ( not to include interest rates).

maybe… What was your SAT or ACT? The only reason I’m asking is because some schools are doing preferential packaging for FA…giving higher stats students better aid. You are very much wanted by this school. :)

ehhh…My SAT wasnt to goood…1560. I didnt take the ACT. I’m involved in alot of clubs and sports also. I think My resume made stick out as much as my grades didn’t lol. I think i recieved my financial aid is because of my mothers low income to be honest. College is so expensive these days!

Coolbrezze- I will call the financial aid office and ask them about my future as entering UNH. This is also a good point to discuss to them about. I have alot of things to be concern about

The ACG grant appears to be available for students during their first and second years of college…but you may want to check into this a bit further…

Best of luck!

Well…congrats!!!

I really am pleasantly surprised to see an OOS public meet need like that…rarely does that happen - even when family income is very low!! Consider yourself very lucky!

I hope everything works out well in the long run. Thank you everyone for the help.

I think this is an excellent package! Congratulations!

Congrats on your acceptance and finding a good FA package! ACG is a two year possibility (second year is contingent on having a gpa of 3.0 and a certain number of credits), but the ACG and SMART grants are on the federal chopping block and may be gone after the 10/11 school year. ACG is not a big money award anyway, but don’t count on the second year of $1300!
