I went to my counselor for the first time as a sophomore last year in an effort to get to know him and vice versa. I've visited him a total of 4 times now. Unfortunately, after going to him with questions like "How will colleges look at..." and "Which class would be best...", he either refuses to help or gives a vague answer. Does anyone else have the same problem? Who do you turn to instead? (If anyone.)

I have a guidance counselor kinda like that, I just gave up going to him, got into contact with the head of guidance and he was a better resource for me. I generally rely on teachers for advice and “guidance”. I have a few that I’m comfortable talking to about anything, so I appreciate their advice on college, HS, or life matters

I had a counselor like that, but I was very good friends with teachers, and our scheduling was very simple, so I basically made my own schedule, ran it by a couple teachers, and then would hand it to my guidance counselor. Any questions I had were solved by “teh interwebs” or a reliable resource :)

I had the same problem. You should try talking to your teachers.

I have had that kind of counceler and when ever I go to the other counceler, she tells me to go to mine so uh yeabh

@Swag87 don’t listen to everything others say to you! Make appointments, call/visit often and - if necessary - get your parents involved.

Yep, my guidance counselor is super friendly but just isn’t that knowledgeable about admissions to top-tier colleges. Whenever I ask him questions about course rigor and the like, he always gives me cliche or vague answers, so now I just consult this website haha

Honestly, I don’t think there are a lot of regular counselors out there that are super helpful or knowledgeable. The guidance counselors at my school are honestly wastes of paychecks, they literally do and know nothing. I recommend that you just go use Google and CC as your main resource when it comes to college preparation :)
