Posted this in like three other threads already, but I'll do it here anyways...

I'm not hooked AND I have a TRULY average GPA. My SATs are good, though.

Here's my story:

I'll preface this by saying I am not an athletic recruit, URM or legacy.

SATs: 800 Verbal, 620 Math, 800 Writing (Perfect grammar subscore, 12/12 on essay)
SAT IIs: 720 World History, 800 US History, 790 Literature
GPA: 3.26
Rank: 251/469

My ECs are long and involved (not too many of them, I just did A LOT with the ones I got involved in) so I'm not going to type them up.

Used a fee waiver.

Accepted: Dartmouth College(Attending), University of Georgia, Tufts University, New York University
Waitlisted: Duke University
Rejected: Harvard University

I am SO happy I got into Dartmouth, it was my first choice by far. I can't wait to go there in the fall.

Yeah definitely didn't have much extra stuff going for me. White girl, attempts to swim rather poorly, eldest child, dad went to college but mom dropped out, if I told you my name, you would have no idea who I am...so I'm pretty sure I count. I got into MIT and Cornell.

hmm...I'm pretty sure that I count here too...because although, I am a minority (asian), I'm an ORM, so, I'm guessing there's actually a little more against me...
My GPA (uw) is 3.86...not exactly stellar; weighted is 4.97
my sat combined is 2200, which is ok but not great
I'm 5/452 in my class
I was pretty heavily involved in music, no sports whatsoever...didn't win the Westinghouse competition, or start a famous publication...
Pretty sure only those in my small suburban town know me...other than family, so not famous...
And I got into Duke, which rocks my world!

I second Duke; and I took the SAT 5 times AND showed a decreasing trend every single time I took it...lol...whatever, they truly do just take the highest score and don't give a flip about the lower scores. My verbal score after the fifth time was lower that my first verbal score...LOL :"

jason, the primary way to show dedication to an EC is through awards. If the activity your involved in doesn't really give awards, the best way to show how much the activity means to you is through your essay. If awards and essays don't do enough to portray your dedication, extra materials may be an option. Certain schools are more accepting of this, but I sent a newspaper article that covered a fundraiser I organized and I think it was worth it to do that.

how about single-handedly organizing a large scale event and broadcasted live on TV/6 o'clock news? (My mom actually bought a recording of that news story from the tv station)

Totally unhooked. Got into Penn. Good stats, but nothing exceptional considering the other 2500 kids who got accepted there (or even the thousands who were rejected). Academically, I was probably only in the top 25-30% of applicants.

GPA: 88.4% cumulative (upward trend)
Rank: Top 6% in school, 9/76 in honours program.
SAT I: 800 CR, 760 M, 710 W
SAT IIs: 770 Math 2, 720 Literature
ECs: Newspaper editor, lit. journal editor, hockey coach, quiz team

Oh yeah, and I'm a white, upper-middle class Jew who went to a private high school. That must be my hook.

Sure, those are good numbers, but you know what I mean when I say they're not better than those of many other Penn applicants who were rejected.

No hooks here either...another Asian on the west coast (although more north than Cali). In at Brown, Pomona, Tufts, Barnard, and NYU, deferred EA then rejected by Yale.
