Hi everyone,

I am an international student applying for second bachelor degree in Computer Science. There are not many choices for me since universities always take freshman as their priority. Right now I am torn between University of Texas at Tyler and University of Wisconsin - La Crosse (UW-La Crosse is where I got my first degree so it might take about one year less if I study there)

Those schools are not very popular, I cannot find much information. So I would really appreciate any help/advice/experience sharing about the program rankings, jobs opportunities, campus life, etc. between those 2 schools.

Thank you very much !!!

* There are not many choices for me since universities always take freshman as their priority*

That may be true at Calif schools, but I don’t think this is true for many universities. However, often there is no aid available for second BS’s.

Are your parents willing to pay all costs?

If so, what are your stats? We probably can name other schools that will happily take a student for a second degree.

mom2college, thank you for your inputs !!

Im pretty good at maths, physics, got a couple of international awards in high school. However my college GPA is only 3.3 (since I was not really into business). I am pretty sure that universities may consider 2nd degree applicants but only after they have gone through all freshman applications. Plus, computer science is quite hot at the moment.

And yes, I understand financial aid will not be available for 2nd degree.

Your assumptions are based on what a small number of schools may do. Many schools would consider your app along with others…and would happily accept you into CS. Most schools do NOT accept by major. They accept you to the univ, and you can do ANY major you want.

For instance, at Alabama, you could apply as a CS major and get accepted because Bama (the school) accepts the student. The student can pick ANY major he wants. He can even change his selected major after acceptance, which further proves that it doesn’t matter if you’re CS. I doubt Bama has any policy that “sets aside” your app until after frosh apps.

How will you pay for this second degree.

Yes your are right, many schools will just let me pick any major if I am accepted to the school. However, top ranked schools are selective and hence there is little chance for me, as I contacted most schools in top 20.

I would like to keep financial information as privacy, but you can think of it this way: more than half of the money would be paid by myself, so Im really serious about getting a job after graduation.

Well, do you think small schools such as the ones mentioned above is good enough to get a job, particularly for computer science, assuming that I will be doing well ? How about computer engineering?

UT- Tyler is weak. I think you can get into a better program.
