After a few years away (D is now a junior in college) we are starting the process again with my S, a sophomore in HS. After visiting with his guidance counselor he is starting to put together a list of schools. Does anyone here have experience with / opinions about University of Northern Iowa or Truman State University?

My son visited both! He ended up at Truman is loves it. He has awesome scholarships there, even being out of state, so I think that is what helped decide this. I think of it as the size of a private school but the cost of a public. Good experience so far.

It was not only the smaller student body and good scholarships, but also the feeling or the vibe he got and he thought it was nice around there. The size of the campus is also somewhat small, so the cold winter walks aren’t so far. Plus he figured Truman might be more challenging academically for him, too, although UNI does have an honors program so I’m sure you can go as tough as you want there, too. There was not one specific reason that stood out as being the only reason, but just a combination of these factors all added up to a good decision in his case.

Which one is closer to where you live? That can be a big factor of course if your child isn’t comfortable being that far from home. Did your D go far from home? I know some kids love that but for others it is a deal breaker.

Well, we are in Northern California and D is in Michigan. Both kids have spent their entire life in our community and want to go somewhere else for school. D took a liking to the midwest. I understand about your S liking the vibe of the school, our D chose her school over 8 others for a variety of reasons that are hard to categorize…“vibe” is as good as any.

S is looking all over the country. He is a sophomore now but should have a decent list together in his junior year. We will probably visit schools in his junior year so he can apply early in his senior year. He is casting a wide net and some schools (like Truman and UNI) are hard to find info on outside the website.

Truman is one of the colleges that is included in the reviews of the College ******* series. I bought that book to read up on it (for whatever its worth, I found it interesting), and now they make those accessible free online, so worth checking if you haven’t done so. I think on the left side of page is where you can go to each section to read about things students are saying on the site. Haven’t visited the site lately to see for sure. Not sure if UNI is on there but a lot of places are, so it’s kind of fun.
