I apologize if this information is already up in another thread, I couldn't find it!

When do the dates for the 2009 Unifeds come out and when will we know what schools will be represented where? I'm trying to get a general estimate of college "costs" for next year and it is difficult without knowing what schools I'll audition for at Unfieds, opposed to on campus. Thanks so much! :)

I just want all of the schools' dates to get posted because a lot of the schools I'm looking at don't go to Unifieds, so I need to strategically schedule my auditions so that I can go to more than one audition for every trip I take.

When I'm auditioning for Millikin I'm also thinking of also going to either Webster or Roosevelt to audition also on that same trip. I'm also looking to go from UArts to Montclair State on the same trip.

freedom_fri911, this is exactly the case with me! When looking at a lot of schools I'm interested in auditioning for, I noticed that about 75% of them didn't go to Unfieds. So I'm starting to feel the anxiety of not knowing, even though it is only May, because I'm going to have be very strategic and organized to audition at all my schools while keeping costs down and, also, not missing too much school. I don't know how graduating from HS really fits into this whole proccess yet. ;)

I forgot to mention this, but the schools on their website are usually always the only ones that attend. I have heard in some cases that some of these schools don't attend all of the Unified auditions, just the main ones (NYC and Chicago)

Freedom: there were actually some schools not mentioned on the website that attended. But, as a point of interest, my daughter went to the Unifieds in Chicago and she scheduled her Millikin audition for two days right before the Unifieds and then did the Roosevelt dance audition the day before and her Roosevelt singing audition during the Unified time frame as well as doing a school tour of COlumbia COllege. There are many ways to kill many birds with one stone.

I believe these are the 2009 dates: January 31st and February 1 in New York; February 2, 3, and 4th at the Palmer House in Chicago; February 5th in Las Vegas; February 7th and 8th in Los Angeles.

I don't know if anyone else has thought about this, but I believe that the only reason Unifieds goes to Vegas is for fun. I mean, Vegas and LA are relatively close travelling distance. They don't have a day off between any of the cities, until they get to Vegas where they (mysteriously) have a day off :P

Saying that it's work is just an excuse to chill in Vegas for a little while :)

These college reps deserve a break! I wouldn't want to be in their shoes. Living out of a suitcase and dealing with a different city every few days. Not to mention the weather and the hundreds of auditions to decide from.

My son auditioned at the Unifieds in Vegas last year. Lots of schools missed them because of bad weather. They come from Chicago so who knows what it will be like that time of year. Most of the schools that attend in Vegas are going to see students from the strong performing arts high school where it is held. There are very few students from outside the Vegas area that attend. It is not run the same as the other Unified auditions. Students take turns going up on stage and performing their monologues and songs in front of more or less 20 to 30 college reps and an audience of other audtioners and spectators. You state what area of study you are interested in before starting your monologue (MT or acting or both). After all applicants have been seen (100 or so), the individual schools then put up a callback list when they want a more personal interview with students and meet them individually. If you are not on the callback list, you are not under consideration for their program. If you are called back to many schools, as my son was, it is difficult to find the time to make it to all the callbacks. He had to decide which schools he was more interested in stick with those schools because some of the interviews were more time consuming. Some schools come the day before or after the group audition and make appointments to meet and audition the students individually (CCM and a few others).

We ended up going to L.A. after the Vegas Unifieds because we already had appointments with schools that we did not know attended in Vegas. So, for some schools my son auditioned twice. Personally I think it is better to get the undivided attention that you get from the regular Unified Audition format. Vegas is fun though and if you don't have lots of time, 20 schools see you at one time. Don't blow it, you only have one shot in the Vegas format.

What is the process for scheduling at the unified auditions? Do you schedule with the school? Are you given a specific date and time? or just a date? How do you know which schools attend the specific location?, etc. Our original plan was to attend on campus auditions based on the posts that said it was better to do so. However, after a reality check, my d will be attending the unified auditions and will just have to take her chances.

You schedule individual Unified auditions with the schools. When you apply to the school, they usually have an audition request area on the application that has dates for auditions. The schools that attend the Unifieds will say on the application forms for next year. Most will take appointments for on campus or Unifieds on the a same form. After requesting a place and date, you will be sent a time for your audition (weeks later). Sometimes there are conflicting times for Unified auditions so start early and juggle time slots. Most schools are willing to work with you if you give them plenty of time to reschedule.

We opted for the Unifieds to save time and money. He made school visits after he was accepted. Some schools that are not listed on Unified web page go but there is no guarantee. Sometimes these schools accept walk ins sometimes they don't. We were surprised by some of the schools that were there and did a few walk ins but didn't get any acceptances that way.

I was wondering about how walkins work. I was going to do a walk-in for Harrt but they said I needed to fill out the application and pay the $75 application fee on the spot :/

I didn't really feel like having to spend a lot of money to be seen as just a walk-in

Walk ins are not necessarily looked on as bad. I'm sure the schools are looking for any talent they feel will be good fit for their program. If your talented and it shows in your audition, I'm sure they wouldn't hold your walk in status against you. I've heard that some schools ask why you didn't apply to the school ahead of time.

On the other hand, an expensive application fee could be suspect. We opted out on a few that had similar fees.

Is it just me or is anyone else getting 2007 dates when they go to the National Unified Audition site from the above post??? (Could be my antique computer......hmmmm)

My D went to the Las Vegas unified this year (ajsurfs post said her son went last year) so I wanted to let everyone know that they did not have the cattle call type audition available to all auditionees in Las Vegas this year. I wish they had because at least it would have been more worthwhile for us to make the trip if 20-30 reps could have seen my D's audition and she would have had a chance to do call-backs. Instead, students that were not from the Las Vegas area were not allowed to do the big audition. Only students who lived in the county were allowed on the main stage. We had our Penn State audition there and they stuck the 10-12 auditioners and Cary Libkin in a tiny room full of desks and costumes. Mr. Libkin came in from Chicago after spending a dreadful night at the airport where they had lost his suitcase and all of his materials for the audition. It was by far our worst experience (and I'm guessing his as well) and if the Las Vegas unifieds are held the same way next year, I would advise 2009 students to pass on that venue. In comparison, the LA Unifieds were run very well and I would definitely recommend going to that venue.

My son does attend the high school in Las Vegas where the "cattle call" was held. It was this year, not last. My mistake. LVA is a fantastic PA high school and bringing the Unifieds to them gives the students a great opportunity to be seen by many schools that otherwise would not have the chance to see them. The training is top notch. Thats why the college reps. come in the first place. If your not a student though, do not try for the Las Vegas Unifieds. Even as a student at the school, it is a difficult venue. The few schools that take appointments and auditioned kids separately, like Penn state, I felt were a bit distracted. Granted, they had just come from a very trying trip from Chicago. My son had one appointment there with CCM and didn't feel that the Reps were really into any of students that had come from different parts of the country that day. You never know though. Maybe some of the kids got in. Most of the audtioners were going onto the LA unified afterwards. I definitely suggest the other Unified locations over Las Vegas.

The link I posted earlier is for 2007. I don't think the dates for the 2009 Unified Auditions will come out until sometime in the summer. Also remember that even though they list one specific location like the Hilton in LA, most times actual audition rooms are split between various locations. In LA last year, between two hotels that were within walking distance of each other.

As for walk-ins...most of the very competitive schools are full and have no openings for walk-ins. Some of the lesser known schools may have an opening if you are lucky. I know of students who were successful in getting a walk-in audition and did not have to committ to the application and fee. I would strongly recommend applying early and confirming as many auditions as you feel you can fit in without overdoing it, particularly with your top choice schools.
I have students who did 4 auditions (two each day in New York) and NYU Tisch the day before, and felt that was a lot. Other students squeezed in 6-7 over the 2-3 days and were OK with it.

My D did a walk in at a very competitive and popular program at NYC Unifieds and ended up being offered admission, so it can and does happen. However, as pohsmom says above, don't bank on popular schools having openings. Better to schedule auditions ahead of time.
