My daughter is a rising junior (graduates in 2012). We saw that Otterbein is going to be at the UAs in Las Vegas. Does anyone know if they are going to being auditioning musical theatre folks too? In the heading on the website it only has the theatre and dance department listed.

Also, is it a good or bad idea to audition in your junior year? In other words, would that audition “use up” your one audition for your freshman year of college?

I’m also wondering about the International Thespian Festival auditions summer 2011 . . . would that count as your freshman year of college audition or could she audition again in her senior year of 2012?

We’re just thinking about the experience of that type of audition may be really beneficial, but don’t want to do it if she could use the extra time to prepare.

New two years ago was the Las Vegas National Performing Arts Auditions for seniors (adding Juniors for 2010 who wished to audition for many schools at once in one site as poart of their college application process. The program hosted 17 - 20 colleges it’s first and second years each! The program is first-come, first- served. The 2010 - 11 school year auditions will be the weekend of December 3 & 4, 2010. The program is FREE! to students. All information (past college participants, auditions guidelines, etc) and registration is online at Clark County School District - Las Vegas National Performing Arts Auditions. Las Vegas National Performing Arts Auditions - Clark County School District. You can submit your application, resume and headshots all online. It is held at the Las Vegas Academy of International, Performing & Visual Arts (the arts public magnet high school in Las Vegas). It is specifically planned for the fall of senior year to allow seniors to explore many college choices (schools you have on your radar and those you may not have heard of but may like to recruit you). It is also a way of getting the most “bang” for your buck in a tough economy. Juniors can get an early start on getting on colleges radars. Airline and hotel rates are realllllly cheap right now. Families should be able to economize, share with other families and if you plan right really get by on alow budget to come). This is NOT a unified event BUT another way for you to look into and audition for colleges in the early part of your senior year.
I’m sure Dr. John will respond to this original post - but the Unified Auditions are only for seniors. And yes - Otterbein auditions for their musical theatre program at the Unifieds.

Otterbein does attend the Unified Auditions in New York, Chicago, and Los Angeles but not in Las Vegas.

The Las Vegas auditions are conducted much like the rising senior auditions held at the International Thespian Festival in Nebraska in June. Students do a brief general audition for all the university representatives, who post a list of the students they want to see. Students then go from room to room to meet the reps. If they stay longer with one or two schools, they may not make it around to see all of us.

This kind of system is fine when we’re just meeting students in June or October or November, but doesn’t work for us when it comes to the actual auditions in January, February and March. In NY, Chicago and LA we do private auditions that last 15 minutes. We also schedule anyone who wants to audition. It’s a fine-tuned process designed to give students a good (if brief) view of us as well as allowing us to get a good (if brief) view of them. We just haven’t been able to do what we need to do in Las Vegas. Other schools have figured out ways to make it work for them, which is why they go to Las Vegas.

That may be more than you wanted or needed to know, but your question deserves an explanation as well as an answer.

Hope this helps. Enjoy your Labor Day weekend!

Thank you for your response . . . somehow I missed this - probably because school had just started! (I’m a 5th grade teacher). We’ve decided to go to Chicago.

Hi,
I will be travelling with my daughter to the Chicago Unifieds next month. We were a little late in the game getting things set up, but feel that Otterbein is an exceptional program that she is very interested in. I know you have to apply before signing up for an audition-she would be able to submit her application ASAP, but is there any hope of still getting an audition slot in Chicago?
Thanks!

Have her apply online for admission. The application need not be complete in order to request an audition. Immediately send a note to our audition coordinator. Instructions are on the website. We’re full for Chicago, but her name will go onto a waiting list. We’ll look at the situation next week.

I will tell you that we have spaces for our on-campus auditions, as well as slots in NY and LA.
