Attending the Unified Auditions in Chicago and have a few questions. Most of the colleges that have confirmed offspring's audition times have given scant info about location. Most just say Palmer Hilton, a few say only "Chicago". Only Julliard gets specific about which hotel, which tower, floor, room, etc. --and they are actually at the Hyaat! Assuming that the others are at the Hilton, will there be a directory of some kind at the information desk or somewhere to tell what rooms to go to? (Is it possible that the schools do not yet know this information?) Will there be a warm up room available for the students? Will there be a waiting room for the long suffering parents (other than the bar!)? Quite possibly these questions will answer themselves when we get there, but I like to arrive prepared.

Hey hotNcold!

I’ll be attending the Unified Auditions in Chicago as well, and my dad has been pressing me for the same information. However, it is my understanding that there will be a directory when we arrived at the Palmer House, and presumably at the Hyatt as well.

It never hurts to email the schools though with your questions, which I will be doing in a week if there hasn’t been any information sent out yet. As for the warm-up and waiting rooms, I have no idea.

I like to arrive prepared too, so hopefully our questions will be answered soon!

Thanks, Actor. I too will try to find out more and will post if/when I do.

So far as I know, only Julliard is at the Hyaat.

The schools which are actually a part of the Unifieds will all be at the Palmer House Hilton on E. Monroe St. Other schools which conduct regional auditions at a similar time to the Unifieds, such as Juilliard, will be in other locations and you should be determining that information from each of those schools. As for times for Unifieds schools, in the past, each school would notify you of that. Did you not set up specific audition times with each school? As for what room they’ll be in at the Palmer House, my guess is that that information will be available when you arrive.

Purchase is also at the Hyaat.

Our son did a drop-in at the Unifieds with RSAMD 2 years ago and will be finishing up his second year in Glasgow, Scotland. This, like many BFA programs is not for the faint at heart…you go to school 8 AM to 6 PM Monday through Friday and come back at 7 PM to 11 PM when rehearsing for a play. You go to school from the end of September to beginning of July. You start acting your first year and get your BFA in 3 years!!! You are responsible to cook your own meals and can live in a student housing (privately run) which I would suggest first year and most get apartments for the final two. They encourage you to get professional jobs in school and will leave your spot open if you land a professional role. They have 4 spots for American students (not officially but the last four years this is how many they have taken in each class) and most/all will graduate in three years. He just got back before the Holidays performing in Moscow for a week. He will be doing Shakespeare in March and has the lead in main stage play this October…all on a drop-in.

The Math:
3 three years at RSAMD will cost $30,000 less than his four year degree if he had attended Roosevelt (CCPA) which he was accepted to and was his second choice. This includes 7 RT plane flights to UK, lousy exchange rates and high cost of living.

What About?
OK so now your in Glasgow (3 years) and you have no contacts intthe USA for job possibilities. The real scoop…most all of our kids will have NO contacts coming out of their programs whether they are at NCSA, UArts, Thish, Carnigie etc. They are going to have to go to NYC or LA and start making those contacts. My son got sound advise as he was making his decision to go overseas when he had a phone conversation with the EVP of one of the largest Talent agencies in the world (contact through his older sister). He said, “go to the UK and get classically trained, we prefer to actors with those skill sets.” Notice the flood of UK actors on our stages and screens? And yes…RSAMD has a showcase in London for directors, casting agents and talent agents and have also taken US students to NYC for one.

Yes
It is difficult (not impossible) for an American kid to get and extended visa to stay in UK and perform but there is a Young Artists Visa (for 2 years) he can apply for as he nears graduation (which he will do )

I will miss my baby!
We see our son more than either of his two older sisters that attended schools 2,000 miles away and 500 miles away…SKYPE! (it’s FREE) Even if your child is going to school in- state it is the bomb. Prior to this post our son Skyped us and we spoke live on video and he reviewed his week, was headed to a concert in Glasgow with his two roomates and said he give us a call tomorrow with a complete download. I have seen him twice this week on the computer for free…have you seen your other college kids away at school this week? It has made the 5,000+ miles away all the difference.

While this is not for everyone…for the right individual this will be a once in a lifetime experience.Your student needs to be mature and be able to matriculate easily with others in a new enviornment. This has been amazing program.

Feel free to send me any questions that you may have. If this sound like it could be a fit for your child and you are attending either the NYC or Chicago Unifieds I would check them out. Lovely staff, very good people.

On the note of the Royal Scottish Academy…
I’m a Roosevelt student (CCPA) and a representative from the Royal Scottish Academy just came to our school and sat in on a number of classes. He talked to our staff and they told us that he really liked the work we were doing here and that we may possibly have an exchange program with them sometime in the near future!
