Howdy... Just doing some organizing and going through my list of schools and which do not appear at Unifieds..

From my hours of reading CC I have concluded that CMU (Carnegie Mellon) is certainly a top-notch MT school (also with an extremely strong pre-summer program). This is why I am surprised to not see it on the Unifieds list.

Kyle, while there are many schools which DO participate in the Unifieds, there are many more which don't. If you look at the list at the top of the main MT forum page, you'll see several which do not, including CMU, NYU, U of A, MMC, Sam Houston, Point Park, Shenandoah, Baldwin Wallace, Cal State Fullerton, UCF, Elon, FSU, Northwestern, OCU, and Syracuse. So, as you can see, there are many excellent programs which choose not to participate in the Unifieds. A few of these hold regional auditions at the same time as the Unifieds, but not in every Unified location. It's best to check with the schools you're interested in directly and find out where/when they will conduct regional auditions. Some schools you will have to travel to campus to audition.

kyle style - CMU doesn't actually participate in the Unifieds, but they audition in the same cities on the same dates, just different locations! So you an check their dates directly and you'll find that they will be in NY the same weekend, but they won't be auditioning at the building where the others are. It makes it a little harder, because you have to go from place to place, but I'm sure it's less costly than going to CMU by itself. Point Park doesn't do Unifieds. They do go to NY (I don't know where else) on a different weekend. I'd recommend going there in person, though, earlier in the audition season, if possible. Syracuse also goes to NY, but on a different weekend than the Unifieds. Sorry I don't know anything about B-W auditions.

Just wanted to add for Kyle: for example, Tisch has regional auditions in Chicago, Atlanta, Houston, L.A. and San Francisco. So, check with your list of schools to see if they do the same!

Although the CMU auditions in New York are held at a different location than the Unifieds, their Chicago auditions are held at the same hotel (Palmer House) during the same dates as the Unifieds.

Last year CMU, NYU, and Juilliard were all at Chicago Palmer House during unified week, although none of them are listed in the official unified list.

Last year, I believe unless you sent a tape, you needed to go to campus to audition for BW, OCU, and Elon.

My D and I were fortunate enough to spend several wonderful one on one hours with the admissions and theatre department at Point Park last week prior to her beginning the Pre-College program at CMU. We were told that they will be participating in Unifieds this year, and will begin auditions on campus in November, not September. Great school, great people! Now she is soaking everything up at CMU!!

You're right, if you've got a boy who is hooked on musical theatre, he is danged dedicated to his craft. Mine is dropping football with a state ranked team to spend more time on his dance.

Your son should contact TheatreJock from here on CC - I think his email is enabled or PM him - b/c he played football and baseball all 4 years of high school. (This past year his team played in the Ohio state championship and lost a heartbreaker; he was a starter.) Although he didn't give up football, he faced a lot of challenges of people questioning his decision to do theatre, b/c he was being offered athletic scholarships...He'd be a good sounding board for your son! :)

Some schools hold regional auditions which are not associated with the unifieds. I know in the past that BOCO and CCM audition in Atlanta, and Syracuse and Ithaca in Washington DC. I am sure there are other schools associated with these auditions and possibly in other places, but this is all that I am familiar with since my d may be looking to these as some alternate possibilities. I am sure the knowledgeable minds here at CC will fill in what I left out.

When I went to Unifieds in march 2005, CMU was not in the Palmer House. It was the one audition that I had to leave the hotel for. It was maybe a 5 minute ride by cab though so it wasn't bad. But it was very early in the morning and it took several hours longer than they said it would.

As Kaysmom stated, CCM and BOCO usually audition in Atlanta. Last year Point Park, NYU, CMU, Webster, DePaul, Miami (and probably others; these are just the only ones I remember noticing on the websites) However the dates range from January through March; they are not necessarily on the same weekend or location (although they might be). You would need to check each school's website.

I am entering my senior year of high school and wondered when the unified audition dates come out for this year. Before Katrina I was attending a performing arts high school (and their seniors travel to Chicago as a group), however now I am in Mississippi at a regular high school (with a sucky drama department to say the least). I am putting my energy into community theatre this year coming to gain some skills............. please reply... Thanks... Sarah

This is a quote from Dr John re: Otterbein's dates at the Unified auditions:

Here are the Unified dates for us:

February 4: New York (other schools will be there on the 3rd as well) - American Management Association
February 5-7: Chicago - Palmer House Hilton
February 10: San Francisco - hotel tba
February 11: Los Angeles - Hilton LAX

Now the schools listed are who is going to be there... does it change.... could there be some that will be there but are not listed.... should I call each school.... and do I need to apply to any school I wish to audition for... is that how it works.... I'm flying blind here.... my forte is vocal... I can dance... I took until 6th grade at a school and then had instruction at the performing arts high school I attended half a day... but it is barely in my comfort zone especially when I am nervous... once I've practiced the number... it's not a problem..... so I am leaning to the unifieds because from what I've been reading the dance sections are shorter at them verses the on-campus auditions... is this true.......

and I've also heard that you should get your auditions in with your top choices before christmas because scholarship money runs low after the 1st of the year.... any of your thoughts on this would help also.....
