I was not trying to imply that UCSB theater department was comparable to USC’s as it is not. I threw out comments about them as it was on your list. It is small but they have had a couple of students go on to have great professional careers. And there is something to be said for in-state tuition at a school with two miles of its own beach! The academics are solid in spite of its “party school” reputation.

A word about UCSD (where my brother and two cousins attended). When it comes to theater many people would rank them as one of the top four MFA programs in the country. The others being Yale, ACT and UW. If I was going to be an undergrad theater major at any of those schools I would want to be convinced that the masters program did not significantly overshadow the undergrads. I am not saying that they do but other programs have been accused of such.

CMU and SMU have exceptional reputations. The ONLY reason I suggested taking them off your list is that you said your d “wanted more than just a conservatory experience”. As far as other programs in CA, while it is a conservatory she could look at Cal-Arts. It has an excellent reputation and is a lot closer than Pittsburg.

Does anyone know how you find out about Unified auditions? My D will need to start the audition process in the fall and I am not sure where to look for the unified information.

Hello, all. I have important news for you. Here are the dates for the Unified Auditions in 2008:

New York, February 2 and 3
Chicago, February 4, 5, and 6
Las Vegas, February 7
Los Angeles, February 9 and 10

Veterans will recognize that we are no longer stopping in San Francisco, and that we have added a day in Los Angeles. All too often, we see students in San Francisco and then see them the next day in Los Angeles. We think that spending two days in L.A. (as we do in N.Y.C.) will make scheduling auditions on the west coast easier for everyone.

We also know that the Consortium of Conservatory Theatre Training Programs (Boston University, Carnegie Mellon, North Carolina School of the Arts, and SUNY-Purchase) will be in L.A. on the 11th. Some of the unified schools may choose to stay through the 11th as well.

Here's a link to the list of schools which are part of the National Unified Auditions:

Thanks doctorjohn for the update. We are also interested in auditioning for Elon, Syracuse and Oklahoma City and those are not represented on the unified list. Does anyone know if these universities offer regional auditions

OCU is only on campus. OU (Norman) does do some regionals and sometimes peole confuse the two. I think Elon is also only on campus but Ericsmom would know for sure

Thanks Dr. John for the update on unified auditions!!--
OK Class of '08 parents--looks like this is starting to become a reality all too soon! Anyone else starting to feel a little anxiety?? :)

jacksdad - everyone above is correct. Unless they change it next year, OCU and Elon offer only on-campus auditions. Syracuse offers regional auditions in early Jan. in other cities, but they do not have representatives in the cities at the time of the unified auditions. Your best bet is to check their web site, but it seems that they offer a wide variety of cities very early in Jan.

The Hilton couldn't accomodate all of us for both days in LA, so some of us will be at the Westin. The two hotels are within walking distance of each other on Century Blvd. The Westin is just west of Aviation Blvd, at 5400 West Century, the Hilton just east at 5711 West Century.

Please note that the dates which are still up on the website are for 2007. The 2008 dates are in post #491, above.
