Mary Anna I think walk-ins come down to which schools arent totally booked or have cancellations. Two years ago a boy from my school got accepted on the spot to Utah and also got accepted to Northern Illinois and turned down by NCSA on walk-ins. I know for a fact that last year a girl walked in for Hartt and Cornish. I am not completely sure but it seems like I have heard of some others walking in for SUNY Purchase, Cal Arts, Otterbein, Rutgers and Roosevelt. Those were for acting but I think you said some of your students are going for acting.

When we were at the unifieds, they were held on a Saturday and Sunday, not during the week. I think they went from 8AM - 5PM on those days. We did do an audition on a Friday, but it was specific to the school auditioning in NY on that day, and not actually part of the unifieds.

ckp, the NYC auditions, on Saturday and Sunday, are restricted to 9 to 5. Wish we could go later, but the site wants us out by 5. In Chicago and the west coast cities, we have more flexibility. We can usually schedule walk-ins at the end of the day. But it is much better to book in advance.

As for applications, abbygail, we normally ask you to apply in advance of scheduling an audition. Obviously, that doesn't apply to walk-ins. But we do ask you to get an application in soon thereafter, because we can't send you a decision letter until you apply. I don't know if other schools have this policy, but I suspect they do.

Mary Anna, there's no standard list of schools which accept walk-ins, but the anecdotal accounts here are reasonably reliable, I think. I would add Liverpool (LIPA) and Royal Scottish (RSAMD) to the Chicago list. But, again, I still think it's smart to check with individual schools.

I am going to be doing the Unified Auditions in NYC and I am auditioning for 3 schools. I wanted to know if it will be one audition in front of all the schools or if it will be separate auditions.

Your auditions will be private

Best of luck to you!

cb842,

Details about the Unifieds in NYC are included in this thread. I suggest you go back and read through all the info. Good luck!

so. here is my audition schedule so far
Feb 6- CCM, Webster
Feb 7- Ithaca, Carnegie Mellon
Feb 8- Emerson, NYU
Ithaca hasn't given me a time yet...what happens if they overlap? ahhh...so worried about that...

ToTheStage,

Call them!

but see that's the thing, I called them to ask which date I got from my yellow slip....and then they said I'd get more info 2 weeks before the audition...so I figure that's when I'll know the time...but...AH. I don't know. yeah. I should just call.

CMU at unifieds

Did anyone audition for CMU at the Unifieds last year? What was the arrangement for the dance portion in relation to the singing and acting parts? Was there time to change in between dancing and the other portions? Was there one auditor or many?

Two things: chrism - I am not at all entirely sure about this, but my impression of the CMU unified audition is that you sing for Gary Kline (and others?) in one room, and then are sent to a different room (possibly two different rooms?) to perform your monologues for other faculty. All of this being after the dance audition. Can anyone confirm or deny this?

Also, I have a question about doing walk in auditions...if you do choose to do them, it seems like they would ask "So...why didn't you apply to our school in the first place?" lol I can't really think of an answer to that question that would put you in a good light, except for maybe not knowing much about the school until recently? You can't really say "Oh, well I didn't have time" or "Oh, I just wasn't too interested orginally"...I'm sure there are good and honest responses to a question like that, I just can't think of any lol. Any ideas? Or maybe they never ask questions like that??

aspiringactgress1 - Good question. Last year my D did a walk in at Webster. She got a great vibe and did her absolutely best audition (possibly because there were no strings attached, so she wasn't nervous?) They did ask why she hadn't applied and she told them she didn't even know of the program (smack her in the head- BAD ANSWER)> Truth is, we hadn't originally planned on looking so far midwest (we're from NJ). She should have said that, instead. It's good to come up with some answers ahead of time, so you're prepared.

Maybe something along the lines of "I know XYZ is a wonderful program, unfortunately I needed to limit my applications to X#. I truly was hoping I would have this opportunity to audition for you, here, at the Unifieds."

I'm sure someone can come up with a better one than that, though!

How about..."I was thinking I should really limit my auditions/applications to 6 [fill in the appropriate number for you] schools, but lately I realized that by doing this I'm really limiting my choices, so I decided at the last minute to add a couple more good schools to my list". That was my D's situation last year! Don't know if she stated it this way, though.

Thanks lynnm and chrism that's a good answer, I'll probably use it if asked! :) if anyone else has any thoughts, post! Happy New Year.

I am bumping this up. It had a few additional pointers before the CC site went down and lost some items.

My pearl of wisdom was to remind people going to unified that in addition to bringing tapaes/cds of t heir music, many schools want you to bring a boom box. Check with your schools.

And my tip was that some schools won't let you USE your own boombox but will want you to hand the CD to them and put it in their boombox. All variations are possible.

is it necessary to bring both a tape and CD to the audition, or should we expect that only CD's are being used nowadays?

Great tips from all - for example Ithaca requires that you bring a CD of your vocal selections that they can bring back to their music director. This is in addition to your boombox and CD that you use for your audition. They only do this at unifieds!!

I think Ithaca's requirement of bringing a CD or tape of your singing only applies if you are outside of the state of NY, so bring it to Chicago, but not required in NYC at those unifieds. Double check on the web site. I thought it said that you do not bring it if auditioning in NYC or in Ithaca.

While it seems contradictory, Ithaca wants students that audition anywhere other than the campus itself to provide them with an audio tape or CD of the singing portion of the audition. This includes auditions in NYC. The sheet my D got today explains this by noting that the tape/cd will be shared with the music director at the College.

Okay, now what how do I deal with Ithaca (9:15-12:30) and Emerson (10:30-?) overlapping? I'll call Ithaca and see if they can schedule her audition early and then call Emerson and see if they can schedule her later in the session.

What fun...
