Unifieds 2008 - a question

Are the New York City Unifieds (for 2008) all basically held in the same building, or is it true that kids end up having to go to different locations/buildings in New York to audition for some schools? On a different message board, students were discussing this, and some were saying it's better to just audition at the Chicago Unifieds because all the auditions are held in the Palmer House. Love to hear from anyone who knows more about this.

NMR, the Unifieds have been held at the same place in NYC for several years - the American Management Association at Broadway and 48th, so I'm not sure what these kids are talking about. If you check the Unifieds website, you can see the list of the participating schools, all of which will be at that location. It's possible that a few schools who do not participate in Unifieds may have regional auditions in the city at a similar time, and of course, Tisch auditionees would go to NYU's location for theirs, but the Unified auditions, themselves, will all be in one location.

I reserved a room at the Palmer House for the Feb Unifieds. Does anyone know if the hotel offers for a group discount rate? The hotel was not aware of one, but I remember someone mentioning it on CC last year. They did tell me that if there is one they will honor that rate.

NMR...I think the confusion is that the kids who were commenting about this elsewhere on the internet were referring to schools that are not officially part of Unifieds and their examples were schools for ACTING, not BFA in MT, and who must hold auditions in NYC around the same time as Unifieds. But the schools who officially participate in Unifieds are at the same location.

Two MT examples of NYC (not Unified) auditions:
Syracuse holds auditions in NYC early in January--at least last year they did. I don't recall where they we were held, but it was not AMA building. Check their website.
Marymount Manhattan has various audition dates, which may or may not include the weekend of the Unifieds (check their website); they are held at the school.
Hope this clears things up, however incrementally! (it's a process)
Break legs

Thank you so much, soozievt! Not that it's that big a deal to travel around NY to several locations for auditions, but it would be nice to avoid that if possible. I imagine that Unifieds are stressful enough!

Judy, the hotel does offer a discount rate for the Unified's auditions students..When I called to get my room, I had asked about it but they said that all the rooms were taken..so I'm positive you can get a discounted room, just call closer to the time, probably very early next year, because I had called around the end of January...

NotMamaRose,
Yes it's true - some schools did audition at other locations than the American Mgmt......Ithaca held it's auditions @ another location in NY (few blocks away - a short cab ride or a looong very cold walk) this past Feb. Check each school.

this is a dumb question-whats a unified?

Every year, a number of schools hold auditions over several days at one location in Chicago, New York and (do I have this correct?) San Francisco or LA. This allows kids who want to audition to do so at one place, rather than having to travel to 6 or 10 different schools.

Not a dumb question at all. In addition to auditioning potential students on campus many Theater and MT programs have regional auditions around the country. 20+ of these schools have coordinated their regional auditions to be in the same cities on the same dates, therefore givng students an opportunity to audition for a large number of schools with minimal travel. The schools get a large pool auditioners to hopefully identify and recruit around the nation. Classic win-win. You can learn more about the National Unified Auditions at their web site:

http://www.unifiedauditions.com/

Some specific schools describe how the auditions difer from their on campus auditions on their websites under the regional auditions descriptions.

Thanks so much for your help! Its appreciated :D

How early should my dad reserve a hotel room for the Palmer House in Chicago? I want to reserve a room for our family and some friends who are coming with me to unifieds...before the hotel gets booked!

If you're definitely planning on going, why not book now? You still can cancel them closer to the time if you change your mind...

Hi Nate--I agree with lynnm, book it now-- we did, giving us one less thing to worry about! :)

I'm not going so I'm okay :)

How do you know which schools are in which cities? UofM apparently does the NYC Unifieds, but they do not do the LA Unifieds. Are there other schools that just do some of the cities? Will there be a more final list posted on the website at some point?

If you go to www.unifiedauditions.com it has a list of locations and what schools will be at those locations. I didn't see U of Mich posted on the website...unless they are going to NY the same time the unifieds are taking place.

nate;
U of M = University of Miami
UMich = University of Michigan (Last Feb. they were not at the NY "unifieds" rather at NY/"regionals" = separate auditions)
P.S. Other regional examples - Syracuse (NYC), NYU (Atlanta, etc.) Emerson (Miami) etc......check each school....a lot to learn...good luck! :-)

Last year, at New York, we stayed at the Crowne Plaza Times Square (they do have other locations in Manhattan, so check), It is the hotel that houses AMA. However we had to travel 10 or so blocks for NYU, CMU, and do separate weekends each for UMich, Montclair (on campus), and Juilliard (on campus). Juilliard was also the same weekend as the unifieds, but my D felt that would be too much to fit in.
It was alot of traveling to NY between late January and very early March!

My D only auditioned for 2 schools at the actual unifieds in the hotel itself, BoCo, (even though we live near Boston, this was the earliest audition she could attend), and CCM, (accepted, and going, Yay)!

So these 4 schools were spread over 4 days, which worked well for my daughter, she felt overwhelmed by trying more than one a day. Some of them are long, and it is difficult to predict how long they can be. Many are 3-4 hours.
