Unifieds 2008 - a question

My son is in the application process for MT now. He wants to audition for several schools in Chicago at Unifieds. We see it is over 3 days. How many do you all recommend? 3? Is 4 too many do you think? Will each school be there every day or does each school hold auditions on a particular day and that's it? There's really no info. on the unifieds website other than the dates and list of schools.

tgbmom, my D has the same questions. I think that the only thing to do is to call/contact each school individually and ask them when they are there, how scheduling happens, and so on. As far as how many auditions your son should do: well, I am hopeful that someone who came before will answer this question.

I already posted that my d thought one audition a day stressful but manageable. We certainly met kids who were planning on doing 2 or 3 a day. I would think it very stressful to try more than two, but see what others who did it say about that.
I think what was most stressful is that each one is different, and require different songs, monologues, dance shoes, etc, and a lot of waiting, some information sessions, and sometimes difficulty finding warmup locations was always unpredictable. It seems easier to go on a NY EPA call where at least you know what role is being cast and you have a sense of whether you are very appropriate or not what "they "are looking for.
Anyway, the unpredictability was much more stressful than one might imagine.
In terms of knowing which schools use which days, get a game plna of which order and on what days your student would prefer if ideal, and then once the apps are in, you can select the day, and hopefully, you'll get it. Don't wait until November or even late October, they start to go quickly!

My daughter did the unifieds in NYC and as others have said earlier, some of them were spread out and not in the same building. I would imagine it would be easier in Chicago to do more auditions in one day. The most my daughter did was 2 in a day and we found that worked out great. There were kids who have done more but we were afraid not knowing exactly how long they would take to schedule too many and have to allow time to get from location to location. Some schools auditions were longer than others and of course it depends where you are in the process once you get there and that you won't know until that day. If you are first to go...great...you can get to your next audition rather easily but if you are last in the group, that could cause you some added anxiety trying to figure out what to do.

CMU has a very long audition process...Ithaca too (which is odd considering they don't even have dance). Daughter got in and out of Penn State rather quickly and Otterbein is great because you have an exact time and you do everything in that 15 minutes.

D did CCM and BOCO at regional auditions but I would think they operate the same at unifieds...CCM was very exact (I think my d had a 10:56 audition time!) and at BOCO they gave two times that were a few hours apart for song/monologue and then dance.

Hope this helps!

Has anyone had a problem getting on the unified website? I have been trying for the last two days and it keeps coming up that it is a bad host.

It was like that last year at this time. I forget when it straightend out, but chack back later in August, early Sept.

If the sight is going to be down for a while...Does anyone know if Indiana University Bloomington will be at Unified in Chicago? I thought I saw them on there before but I have looked at so many different schools my mind is a bit confused.

Snomom,

I don't think they participate in the Unfieds. On their web site they only list three audition dates all on campus. You can find out more here:

Good luck.

Snomom,

Thanks for asking the question about the unified web site, I was wondering the same thing myself. I thought I remembered seeing that Indiana University was a participant. I know what you mean about researching so many schools and becoming confused!!

The unified audition web site is back up. Thanks to all for catching this.

Thanks, doctorjohn! We always appreciate your input. I hope that, now that my D is a rising senior and is about to hit the audition circuit, I will actually get the chance to meet you in person to thank you for all the helpful info you have given to all of us on this list. Can you believe that it's time to start all that auditioning business all over again? How the time does fly ...... :)

I'm auditioning for 5 schools over the course of 3 days in Chicago. I hope that isn't to many lol

nate: 5 schools in 3 days in Chicago is not too much. 15 would be. (I've seen students who've tried to do that.)

NMR: I hope we'll get to meet!

Thanks doctorjohn!

Just made a reservation at the Palmer House Hilton for next February's Unified. Question, though about the group rate - when I called, they said that there is a group rate available but it's only available through an outside booking agent. Anyone know what that booking agent is?

It's true that transfer students can participate in unified auditions as well right?

Oh, also, is it a lot more difficult for MT auditionees to get admitted as opposed to auditioning at the school itself?

Thank you to everyone for all of the helpful info. here. Can anyone give info. on how an applicant actually registers for an audition slot at the unifieds, or do you just show up? I can't find this info. on the unifieds website. My D is likely to do the Los Angeles Unifieds in Feb.

Hi dzmtmom~To schedule audition times for the unifieds you need to set it up with each individual school that your D wants to audition for...that info will be available on each school's website (not the unifieds website) before too long. The unifieds website has a link to the schools that participate so that you can get started there. Make sure you look through each school's requirements carefully (ie appplication needed first?, length of monolologue, song etc) because some vary....welcome! :)

My dad just made reservations for the Palmer House for February 4th and 5th! Sooo excited! Now all I need to find is my monologues and i'll be set!

Jeremybeach:

There have been lengthy discussions about the relative advantage or disadvantage of auditioning at the unifieds as opposed to on campus. Go to the thread entitled "Unified Auditions" up one level in the Musical Theater Forum, and you'll find the discussions.

Historically, for us, students auditioning at unifieds have been just as successful as students auditioning on campus, if not more so. You'll see the reasons outlined in my post of 5/21/2005 (#7 on the Unified Auditions thread).

Hope this helps.
