@deelight- you really might want to purchase the book I Got In! By Mary Anna Dennard. It answers all of your questions, and MANY more in depth,

To be clear, if a program offers a Unified audition, it is interchangeable with an on-campus audition. If a pre-screen is required for that program, it is required in order to schedule an audition, whether at Unifieds or on-campus. The exception is that some programs which require pre-screens (not most) allow walk-ins at Unifieds. If there is a slot available it would be a way around the pre-screen requirement. In that case, there is still no on-campus audition, the Unified audition would suffice. There are some regional theater conferences that are different than Unifieds. Auditioning there is usually considered a pre-screen and if the program is interested, they would invite you to apply to the school and to an on-campus or Unified audition. There are always exceptions, so read the details at each school’s website and call or email for clarification if needed.

If you do a walkin for Texas State that is your treated like a prescreen and you will get a letter either inviting you to the campus for the audition or a no thanks.

There were a couple of schools that had “optional” prescreens for auditions at Unifieds (UArts, Coastal Carolina) - but that may change next year - so it’s always best to go to the source (the school website, or an email or call for clarification to the department) for the most current info for 2015 - and it won’t be updated until August or September for most schools.

University of Oklahoma treats Unifieds as a prescreen as well and will issue you a callback to campus.

What do people think about going to more than one Unifieds? We are planning to go only to Chicago but worry about weather in particular since we come from the West Coast. I don’t want to attend 2 and don’t think that would be necessary but worry about not having a back-up plan. But with the scheuling it seems you would have to commit to both early to get the auditions you want.

We went to Chicago Unifieds from California this year. You never know what the weather will be like, so we decided to fly in on Saturday. We took the 1st flight out on Saturday morning so that if there were any delays we would have time to deal with it. My daughter’s first audition was Sunday night so we gave ourselves plenty of time. My daughter had 8 auditions scheduled plus did 3 walk-ins. We only did the 1 Unified location, but she did 2 other auditions later that same week in Michigan on campus.

My son did the NYC and Chicago Unifieds because I was afraid to put all the eggs in one basket. I think he could have gotten by with only the Chicago Unifieds, though none of his chosen schools auditioned on Sat. or Sun. Going to New York also allowed us to see a little bit of Pace U.

I think we will go the same route as @LoveMyMTgirl. D wants to audition on campus at CCPA for sure.

evilqueen – Check out the thread called “LA Unifieds, Chicago Unifieds or both?”

We are west coast-ish also and had to really bank on Chicago Unifieds. Flew in Thurs pm with first audition on Sat am, so we had a day’s cushion there in case of snowstorms. All through January and through Unifieds week we got a little crazy with vitamins, hand sanitizer, wipes, (and hey, remember the germbana? Anyone?) and all sorts of other germ-killing items to keep everyone healthy, and it worked. I don’t regret that craziness – in fact I continue to use Thieves Spray and my hospital strength sanitary wipes. Don’t judge me. ;)

Someone mentioned Pace being at the New York Unifieds. They are not; Pace has auditions on the same weekend in NYC but you must hop on the subway or take a cab to Pace 's downtown campus. It 's not like the non-Unified schools that hold auditions across the street from the NYC Unifiefs. Plus, they could keep you all morning or afternoon, so keep this in mind when you schedule Pace during the NYC Unifieds. You can’t schedule other auditions too vlose to the Pace time slot.

^ I agree. Son had a Sunday afternoon slot, and it was a long four hours. I think I remember reading that someone’s D was there for a full day, possibly because she auditioned for more than one program? We really didn’t have time to look around the “campus” because we were flying home that night. If I knew then what I know now I would have scheduled for him to do Pace at the Chicago Unifieds, which may have freed up time in NYC unless the audition is a four hour block in Chicago too.

I think Pace was a 3.5 to 4 hour block at Chicago Unifieds too. They started with a long dance call–over an hour.

I guess then the question has to be asked, is Pace worth spending that much time unless it is number 1 on your list? How many people do they admit to their program?

I don’t think Pace is the only school that blocks out 3 to 4 hours, even at Unifieds. CMU asks you to block out I believe 4 hours. Both Pace and CMU had an information session as part of the block.

I think Michigan and Syracuse also asked you to block out 4 hours. You could be done sooner depending on the order in which you are seen, but you won’t know that until the actual auditions ? so you can’t really schedule anything else during that time frame.

Every school my daughter auditioned for at Unifieds required about a 4-hour block, which is often why you can only schedule two per day. Once you get there and find out the line-up, you can try to do a walk-in (or you can call in advance to see where you are on the list so you know a block of time that might be open in which to schedule walkins). Pace takes about 25 for MT, slightly more boys than girls. They have an excellent program.

Wow, ok. I guess I better plan on that. D will for sure have to do some separate on campus audtioning near Unifieds. Thanks all!!!

From D’s schedule - Ithaca and CMU needed 4 hour blocks, CCM needed a 3 hour block - and all the rest were 10-20 minute blocks, with a separately scheduled dance call (if there was one) usually in the evening, or one on the Sunday prior. D auditioned for 9 schools and one summer program - 1 of those was a walk-in. We did spend Sunday in Chicago, as well as extended our stay for the CMU Thursday audition to allow room M-W for the other schools.

When I first started putting the schedule together for her - I was a bit overwhelmed - but it all worked out - and the one time I ended up with a double booking - a quick call to the department allowed me to easily reschedule. We also heard from others who ended up with conflicts - or auditions that were just too close together - that most schools were flexible if you asked to go a little early, or arrived a little late (as long as you communicated with them ahead of time that it was possible you might be late coming from another audition.)

I remember reading from veterans that Unifieds would all work out… and, what do you know - they were right!
