Unifieds for Technical Theatre/Costume

My son will be doing the BFA technical theatre (specfically costume tech) application process this coming fall. Does going to Unifieds make sense for technical theatre or should we make it a priority to get to the interview on the campuses?

This is all mysterious to me, so any thoughts would be great.

So far we have done visits at VCU, CCM, CME, Otterbein and Point Park. Interested also in Rutgers, Pace, Tisch, SUNY Purchase, Webster. Maybe Penn State (a little far from anything). Avoiding cold places and pure arts schools.

Thoughts about Unifieds and anything else?

You said you want to avoid cold places, but most of the schools on your list are in places where it gets very cold? Or did you mean cold in a different sense?

@stagedoormama - I thought the same thing. Rutgers, Pace, NYU, CMU and Purchase are all full winter spots. As for CCM - Cincinnati has a “milder” winter, but it’s still winter.

My daughter scheduled portfolio reviews during NY Unifieds with Montclair State, DePaul, and SUNY Purchase (UNCSA, too, but their design people didn’t come to NY in the snow). Penn State, VCU, and Rutgers were on campus. We thought Unifieds were an excellent option for fitting in more portfolio reviews, given our D’s school and theatre schedule and the rest of our family’s life refusing to stop so we could do college stuff! The campuses we didn’t visit, we figured we’d get to if she needed to see them further along in the admission process. The interviewers she met at Unifieds were not always costume design folks, but they were design, at least.

I found the scheduling could get a little stressful, because each college is completely different about how and when in the process you can schedule PRs, and they announce dates and locations at wildly different times. Whatever school you’re least interested in will have dates available first and vice versa. Overall, I would say if you have the travel and time budget, maybe try to make at least one Unifieds. If you want to see campuses near NY, for instance, you could also extend the trip to include Rutgers, Purchase, Pace, Tisch obviously.

No, I meant cold weather. Really cold, I guess. Ruled out Chicago, Boston, Ann Arbor and Ithaca based on cold. Didn’t say it was rational.

My D did not do Unifieds, We actually visited some schools three times: once to see if she liked it, once to interview, and once for accepted students day. My D was not up for multiple interviews on the same day. It took all of her spoons for each interview. We were going to go to Unifieds just for UCLA, but she decided not to complete her application there.

YMMV.

I applied to Pace, Rutgers, NYU, DePaul, Northwestern, and Marymount Manhattan. I went to each campus (minus Northwestern as a portfolio review was not required, and DePaul- I did a video interview). I don’t think it will affect your consideration whether you do Unifieds or on campus but visiting the campuses made a huge difference to me because it changed the way I felt about many of the schools on my list (the yes’s and the maybe’s).
