Unifieds Question

I live in NY but I am seriously considering taking my daughter to the Chicago Unifieds over the NY Unifieds for a variety of reasons. Does anybody know which colleges would be at the Chicago Unifieds, but not the NY Unifieds? I believe that I have read that more colleges attend the Chicago Unifieds, just wondering which ones go to Chicago over NY.

University of Michigan though they do hold auditions in NYC just not at Unifieds.

Coastal Carolina University will be in Chicago but not NYC. Texas State University will also be in Chicago but not NYC, but you will need to submit a pre screen video to audition.

Neither school is an official Unifieds participant but both will be in Chicago during Unifieds.

UMich requires the pre screen as well.

Thank you…this is exactly the answers I was looking for…Anybody know of any other schools?

NYMom4 - I just sent you an email.

HI there…we live 20 minutes outside NYC and did the NYC unifieds last year for 4 schools. It was easy and quite a relief from all the travelling we’d been doing. What is your reason for going to Chicago?

Elon and JMU are both on my daughters list and I would like to do those both on the same weekend…I can do that, but it would be the same weekend as the NYC Unifieds. Also, Texas State and Coastal Carolina are both on her list and they go to Chicago, but not NYC. It will cost me less money if I go to the Chicago Unifieds over going to JMU a different weekend and also going to on campus auditions for Texas State and Coastal Carolina.

Generally, the Chicago UNIFIEDS tend to be the most heavily populated. If you have a choice, I would probably lean towards Chicago.

Just plan for a long full day for the Elon audition. We were there from 9-6:15. Just an fyi! Good luck!

If you’re going to JMU, check out Shenandoah as well. They’re only an hour apart on 81 with ShenCO being closer to NY.

Ball State bill - Is Chicago more “Heavily populated” by students auditioning or did you mean more populated by schools? Thx

I live about 30 minutes away from NYC in LI. When I went through the process in 07, I drove to Penn State, Ithaca, Syracuse, Hartt. Flew to Pittsburgh for CMU then drove to CCM. The rest we covered at NY Unifieds. It really was a stress free experience.

We flew from Hawaii to Oklahoma City to audition, then to Chicago Unifieds (8 schools) then to LA Unifieds (5 schools) and 1 DVD audition. We started the process very early in order to schedule all the Unified auditions. The earlier you schedule the more control you have over the times. I only had to make 1 change because of a conflict. Keep a close eye on the vocal/monologue vs dance audition times - I had forgotten to put the Boco dance audition on the master schedule but fortunately we were able to fit it in. My daughter was healthy throughout this 1 week time frame - it would have been a disaster if she was ill - but it was the only way we could manage the auditions with the distance we were traveling. Interestingly - she was accepted at the onsite school, 1 Chicago Unified school, 1 LA Unified school and 1 DVD audition school - so the Chicago Unifieds held the lowest yield for us (I know that this is not scientific - just an observation). In the end I think I would have preferred a pre-screening process to lower all those audition fees and maybe reduce the number of overall auditions. Despite all the stress we had a heck of a good time!! We stayed in Chicago for an extra 2 days and went to the Art Institute of Chicago and saw the 25th anniversary production of Les Miserables. BTW we found the Chicago auditions to be much busier than the LA auditions (more schools and more students).

I have a question about Chicago Unifieds. We will be coming from California. What would be a reasonable time to schedule a flight back in the evening, assuming she has auditions on Wednesday? I’m hoping to get her back to school on Thursday, so I don’t really want to wait until then, but I don’t want to limit her audition opportunities, either. How late in the day do they generally run?

I am not sure but just be prepared weather wise. You are flying out of Chicago and that airport is notorious for delays or cancellations especially in the winter. I rarely have flown thru Chicago without an issue. Give yourself room to catch a later flight if your first gets cancelled. Good luck!

Last year we got snowed out of Oklahoma (could not fly in from Dallas) - and got in and out of Chicago (where I had padded some extra time in case of dealys…) just fine!! Ya just never know…However - the week before Unifieds the Chicago airport got hit hard and was closed from Feb 1-3 due to a massive winter storm.

You can count on the El to take you to/from the airport to within a couple of blocks of the Palmer House, so figure a reliable hour for that in any weather. That should give you your answer after considering audition time/s. Cabs are pricier, but quicker if the weather/traffic is cooperative. The flight west, of course, nets you a favorable time change. Unless you have other needs, don’t rent a car-- everything you need/want is right there.

I think that my daughter had a dance call at about 5:00 pm on Wed night. That was the last thing she did.
