Unifieds

Since you are starting this process early, momofnine, use the list of schools on this year’s Unified website as a starting point for research. Have your D look at some of the wonderful programs that might not be familiar to her, but might just end up being a perfect fit.
D’s high school theatre group performed the summer btwn junior and senior years at the International Thespian Festival in Nebraska. She was able to audition for around 40 schools at once. Some schools use this as a pre-screen, others gave call backs to students they wanted to encourage to audition “for real” during their senior year, but it was another great place to learn about lots of schools in a college fair type setting.

Hi Folks! My son, high school class of 2015 is just beginning the process but he needs monologues in a hurry to audition for a summer program. Are people willing to disclose monologue choices now that your audition process is over? His experience is all in musicals so he’s starting at zero and all the plays on our home shelves (hundreds) are now in the “overdone” category. I can’t figure out how to send private messages but feel free to respond that way if you are willing. Good luck to your children.

Hi NACREOUS… I also have a S class of 2015. We are bewildered on monologue choices as well, and will be looking for new choices for the college auditions, but he used at least one ‘overdone’ and did well with it (for summer programs). I think you can go the familiar route and still do well. Don’t stress. If he has a go-to monologue that he’s happy with, use it, no matter how overdone. Especially for summer programs. My S used ‘How I Became King’ - Camelot, something from Our Town - and a Shakespeare piece from Twelfth Night.

I have a daughter…so hers wouldn’t help…sorry

Check The Drama Book Shop in NYC. You can call and speak to someone, give them type and other specifics and they can give monologue suggestions. I just checked with The D to make sure that I give correct info. :)

The Drama Book Shop is AWESOME. One of the little jewels of information we picked up at TPAP! Call them. They will hook you up!!!

They also have a page on their website for monologue recommendations–you filter it by age and type of play, and it gives you suggested titles with descriptions. Great resource!

If you are near Washington DC, a good place to go is the American Backstage Company in Alexandria. Thousands of plays and monologue books, and the guy who runs it absolutely loves to help people find monologues, if he isn’t too busy.
