Union College NY vs Gettysburg College

Hi! I was accepted to these schools and I am trying to decide between them and I’m really stuck because they seem very similar. I would like to get other people’s thoughts as the usual advice of “pick where you fit in” doesn’t seem to be helping. Thanks!

Major?

@OnTheBubble Political Science/International Relations and probably something else

Gettsyburg is stronger in humanities. Why don’t you look at the number of faculty, courses and students in the major.

Thanks for your opinion! I am doing lots of research, but I’m trying to get other people’s opinions too.

Bump. Please help!

Is there anyway you can call both schools and schedule an overnight visit where you stay with a student. I bet that will help you decide more than anything else. You will be able to see if one school feels more like what you want from a school

I think of Union as being a historically strong school (as well as having some well-regarded programs today). I might choose it for that reason.

I’d try to re-visit both and see if one feels more appealing to you. I looked at Union with my D and was very impressed. I would say that Union is the more well known school. But it does have the trimester system which not everyone loves. We never looked at Gettysburg so I can’t compare.

The political science faculty at Gettysburg is about twice the size of Union’s.

That tells me there are more students in the major and obviously more resources are allocated at Gettsyburg.

Definitely check on the number of students majoring at each school.

Union is trimester rather than more common semester system. How does the OP feel about that? Some people love it, others, not so much.

Gettysburg does have a music school/conservatory, which may or may not be significant to OP.

G is better than union for humanities /soc science.
Other than that they’re quite similar, so pick the cheapest

Trimesters allow a lot of flexibility with studying abroad. You could even do two terms abroad at Union. However ending the year in June might make certain internships tough to do.

I got scholarships at both schools so they would actually be the same amount.
I wanted to go to an academically challenging school and have lots of opportunities for internships and study abroad. I’m not sure if the trimester system would help or hinder this.
I also am visiting both schools again. Thank you for all your messages; they are really helpful!

Is cost a factor at all? They’re both solid LACs, but I’m not sure I’d go into debt for either one of them.

@LucieTheLakie It’s not and I got a scholarship so I’m really lucky!

That’s great @vh1818, so what’s your annual cost to attend each school? Since you’re torn, if one is significantly less expensive, then I’d probably go with that, unless your parents have unlimited funds for you.

@LucieTheLakie It’s the same price, 48k, for each college so I can’t really factor cost into my decision.

Is there time to go back and visit each again? At this point, I’d go where you feel like you’d be happiest spending the next four years. (That’s assuming $48,000 a year will require no more than Stafford loans to make it work.)
