Union College (Schenectady) VS Utica College?

How Hard is Union College (Schenectady)'s Electrical Engineering Program? What are the employment chances for Union College Electrical Engineering / Computer Science Students? Also, How hard is Union’s Computer Science (CS) Program? How does Union College’s CS Program compete with Utica’s? What are the employment rates for Union Alums vs Utica Alums?

  • I know both are strong in the math + science areas...It's hard to make this potential transfer decision..

I’m looking to (Maybe) Transfer into one of these schools from my CC I currently attend.

Are there co-ops / internships required to graduate from these schools?

I know Union College’s Chemistry Program is a rival with Utica College’s…Just an example of competition…

These schools are not even close to being similar, and certainly are not “competitors”. Union is a much more selective college. Not sure why you would consider transferring to Utica. The 4-yr grad rate is about 30%, with 39% of students transferring OUT. That tells me that students are starting there and then leaving for something with more advanced opportunity (like you are doing). Doesn’t seem like a great choice to transfer TO. Union is a great school, has more full-time faculty (even though there are fewer students) and an 80% 4-yr graduation rate. If you can get accepted, can handle the rigor, and can afford it, IMO Union would be the clear choice.

Agreed, Union is superior academically as compared to Utica. Union is particularly strong in STEM/engineering fields.

Also concurring. Union is by a reasonable standard one of the top 100 schools nationally.

Union is an outstanding institution. My coworkers two kids graduated from there and they are doing well. His son is a mechanical engineer doing consulting work for Booz Allen.

Utica is suspect at best. They only keep 69% of their Freshman. That is worrying.

I was confused when I read the headline because these are two schools that I did not expect to be compared to one another.

Union is like Clarkson, RPI, RIT, Stevens and WPI while Utica is like Hartwick, Siena, St. john Fisher, and Elmira. Those two groups rarely have much overlap. They are just different schools.

Utica is a young school. It use to be a satellite of Syracuse University and Utica College just stopped issuing the Syracuse degrees to their graduates in the last ten years or so. Utica is a fine school, not spectacular but if you have an interest in STEM field then Union is the place to be.

In all honesty, the only thing I can figure is that you just heard that Utica College has slashed their tuition and you’re wondering if you can save money. In my opinion, you will not have the same post graduate results at Utica that you would at Union.

Union is a liberal arts college with a good engineering program. Clarskson, RPI, RIT, and WPI are tech schools. Union should be compared to Lafayette, Bucknell and Trinity Colleges.

“Union is like Clarkson, RPI, RIT, Stevens and WPI” (#5)

Because of its broad curriculum, Union can also be compared to Colgate, Hamilton, Lafayette, Cornell and Tufts.

Oh and with regards to Siena they retain 89% of their freshman and the 4 year graduation rate is 75%.

Siena is a very good school. Utica is nothing like Siena.

Siena is a really underrated school.

@smokinact This is the case for many non-Jesuit, Catholic schools.

@astern You’re correct. I also wouldn’t say that Utica is an academic peer to Elmira. What I meant was that the course offerings and student focuses were similar. It is true that the rigor of the schools and the credentials of their student bodies are not necessarily similar.

I apologize if I did not explain that clearly.
