Unique acceptance (I think) email

I heard (anecdotally) of the following email sent to an applicant:

"You are not on the list of unaccepted students. "

Parents are very happy.... they think S was accepted! :)

Wow! I wonder who was responsible for this email. I'd hate to actually decipher this email. There's a missing logical link between
not on the list of unaccepted students and on the list of accepted students.

Right -- might there also exist, for instance, a list of waitlisted students?

I would take that email and forward it to the college administration telling them this is not a time to joke with my child or me..
I know this would come off as if I don't have a sense of humor but who does in a situation like this? The colleges make students wait for months on end, play stupid games and then come up with a stupid email like that?

Urban Legend.

Colleges do not play games with acceptances. They may add humor etc, but they will leave NO DOUBT as to the meaning of any communication, especially at this late point.

We did have some misleading communications last year, but they were from the financial aid offices in every case. For instance, my D was WL at Columbia. Early July, they sent us a financial aid notice (rather a non-notice, as all she would have received was a guaranteed loan.) Turns out the award was what they would have given her had they gotten around to taking her off the WL, which they had not.
