Ok, so I really want to major in the pre med area and I'm looking for ECs to do. I really don't want to be in those clubs or be an officer because at this point, I'm sick of seeing people hog up positions to buff their college application. I want to do something that's unique and fun and will actually give me a good experience. Are there any suggestions?

It’s not particularly unique, but research is a great option for prospective pre-meds. I’d suggest checking out http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/high-school-life/1629448-teamrocketgrunt-s-general-guide-to-getting-involved-in-research-p1.html if you aren’t already involved in research.

Volunteering at the hospital can give you a good idea of what you want to do. After volunteering at the pharmacy, I have concluded that I would rather do something else. Maybe I’ll switch to the lab area and see how it goes. But really, the variety of places that you can volunteer in at the hospital keeps things interesting.

I agree with DiscipulusBonus. Taking up research opportunities would be a great idea. If you heard, a couple of years ago, the winner of ISEF was a student that made a paper-based test for pancreatic cancer. Even just participating in research with a medical science project could help you.

I don’t know if it would help with pre-med, but you could always look for interning opportunities. For instance, there’s a place near my school that makes plates for cancer radiation therapy, and I’m planning to intern there in the summer after Junior year.

A good first step for either of these would be to email a university professor or a company about your interest in their research/contributions to medicine. Good luck!
