Unique majors thread

University of Delaware has a major called "Three Languages," and you learn three languages to graduate with this major. Actually, you have to be quite proficient in two of them and not quite as advanced in the third. This seems like a pretty unique major. If you got pretty far in Spanish, French, or German in high school, this might be an especially good major.

An old press release from The College of New Jersey (in Trenton)
(For Release July 14, 2003)

TCNJ offers undergraduate Interactive Multimedia major; first of its kind in nation

Ewing, NJ…Beginning this fall, The College of New Jersey will begin offering a new major in Interactive Multimedia. The first undergraduate major of its kind in the United States, the degree in interactive multimedia combines into one program courses in interactive computing, professional writing, and digital media.

The major is the first in the Media Studies Program in the School of Art, Media, and Music at the College. Students will be required to take courses designed for the major in each of these three areas but will specialize in one: digital media, interactive computing or professional writing.

“Our goal is to produce graduates who know, in detail, the computing, design, and communication principles used to create media products such as web sites, and interactive and linear media. They will be prepared to work on educational and entertainment industry projects such as interactive tutorials, video games and animation effects for movies and advertising,” said Phil Sanders, coordinator of the program.

The essential idea common to all three areas of study is that interaction in computer-based multimedia requires a genuine appreciation for the integration of the written word, media design, and the technical potential of the media. “A practitioner requires basic through advanced skills in digital media design, computer programming, and story telling,” added Sanders.

Writing it or studying it? This reminds me of one of the funniest books I've read recently, Postmodern Pooh. It is a satire of modern schools of literature analysis (well, he makes some up too ...) What do all the pretend papers look at? Winnie the Pooh.
