I want to apply ED II to a school (if it makes a difference which one, let me know) because I want to emphasize how interested and committed I am to attending. However, I do need financial aid. I am aware that I will not get much, if admitted, from the school. Thus, I am applying for many scholarships to make attendance more than possible, but I will not hear back from all of the scholarships by the time EDII decisions are released. I know an applicant is released from the ED agreement if aid is insufficient - but what if the applicant is unsure of the aid for outside sources and attendance could well be possible? In other words, when do I ned to put down a payment? Can I apply ED II and if admitted but not get enough aid, not withdraw other applications, and wait until hearing back from scholarships before putting down a deposit?

No. You will have the option of appealing the aid package and waiting to learn whether it can be improved enough to make the ED II institution affordable, but it is very unlikely that you would be able to stretch that process out long enough to learn whether you win any of those outside scholarships.

When money is an issue, it is best to apply RD. ED is designed for students who know for dead certain that the place is where they want to go more than anything else, and who also know for nearly dead certain that the aid policies of the ED institution guarantee affordability. Run the Net Price Calculator at the ED institution. If it is not clearly and utterly affordable based on that estimate, don’t apply ED. Those outside scholarships aren’t guaranteed. Do not count on one cent from any of them when you are making your plans.

So the benefits of applying ED don’t outweigh that?

From a parent’s perspective, there is no benefit to being admitted to a school you cannot attend. So any tip on the admissions decision from expression of ED2 interest doesn’t matter if you can’t go anyway.

But I can go if I get the scholarships. There are tons of scholarships. I am Hispanic, LGBT, good scores, good writer. I can’t imagine myself anywhere but at this school. You don’t think a school would allow you to postpone a deposit until May 1?

No school will allow you to postpone an ED2 deposit until May 1.

I suggest you get your head around not getting in. When the odds are a coin flip, at best, to selective school, and often way less than that, not being able to imagine yourself anywhere else is a recipe for disaster. Always have a Plan B.

And for the record, there are way too many variables to your financial situation to do this ED2. You’ll never be able to accept with any level of comfort. Dial back to RD.

I agree with the other posters discouraging this idea. You can start with the school’s Net Price Calculator (available on the college’s website in the financial aid section) to understand what a likely financial aid package might be for you.

Which school is it? Have you run the NPC?
I suggest calling the admissions dept and asking about your situation. I agree with previous posters, you should just apply RD.

Remember to file your taxes and FAFSA ASAP if you’re having issues with money.

It sounds like you’re trying to make up a considerable tuition gap with several scholarships…which is a admirable idea in theory, but trying to put the pieces of the puzzle together in the timeframe necessary is difficult. And would the scholarships be guaranteed for all four years of college?

OP-- what the above poster said! So many scholarships are one-time only amounts. They won’t be there in subsequent years to keep you in a school that otherwise gives you insufficient financial aid. Don’t let yourself go to a school that you cannot stay at.
