Unique Story; GPA in the hole. Any chance?

Hey all. Here's my situation. I am a senior at an extremely small and selective high school in New Jersey. To get into the school, I had to compete with 999 other applicants in an entrance exam. I scored well on the exam, and went through the second level of screening - interview. did well on that and got into one of the most rigorous engineering focused high schools in the state.

During my first year in this High School, my mother's Multiple Sclerosis (an autoimmune disease that affects the brain and spinal cord) grew worse and I started having to take care of her non-stop, before and after school. This greatly affected the time I had to do other things. My GPA is, unfortunately, a 4.388/5.000 on a weighted scale. Unweighted, this is equivalent to a ~3.19/4.00 GPA.

Here's my question to you guys - Will the schools I apply to understand?

MIT
Carnegie Mellon University
Cornell
Columbia
Ann Arbor
Urbana Champaign
Princeton
Texas A&M
Purdue - West Lafayette

understand that I have gone through devastating changes over the course of my high school career that have substantially changed the very basis of who I am? They have matured me and given me a clear goal for what I want to do - robotics.

PS - Thanks for your time brah.

Your stats and ECs are relatively good. I think your SAT score prove that you can earn good scores–maybe write your common app essay or a supplement essay in the additional information area about your circumstances and why your GPA is so low in comparison. Also, be sure to mention your circumstances to your GC and have him/her include it in the letter of rec.

You didn’t ask but - four of the schools on your list are out-of-state publics, which are likely to be very expensive for you.

I think I’ve seen you post this exact same thread more than 3 times. Seriously, you need to stop spending time posting chance threads and actually apply to those universities. Whatever people on CC will tell you, it’s not going to change your chances of admission.

You have relatively great ECs, a great SAT score. You have a decent chance, just make sure your essays are stellar and explain your situation.

I think this was in another section of the forums and was moved here. I have already completed most of my apps. Thanks for your concern.

And youre wrong, ive only posted 2 times; once here and once in a different area.

Make sure they understand you aren’t making excuses for your grade and that you are not looking for special treatment! With that said, I think they will understand! Good luck!a
