Hey. I'm a Jewish kid from Long Island (yes, so clich

Your weighted GPA is a 3.92, which is under the harvard average of >4.2-4.4. But your SAT scores are far above the average at all the schools!

Your'e in Northwestern
Berkeley: Slight Reach (OOS) THeir average 4.25 W
JHU: Accepted
UChicago: Accepted
Everywhere else: Reach

Thanks! I wonder, how much do pure numbers factor in? Don't different high schools use different weights for APs and whatnot? And...how did you convert to 4 pt. GPA? I've always wondered, lol.

whats your UW GPA
?"

since it is on a 100 point scale, you divide by 25, because 25 goes into 100 4 times! 98.125 / 25 = 3.92

Actually Harvard and other top schools don't go off of just numbers. Large schools like the UC's do, but smaller ones, try to judge you as a person, bringing diverse people to the campus!

EDIT: A couple of things I forgot to mention! Minor, but they could help me out, no? I skipped a grade so I'm only 16 (17 in June). I'm advanced in math which is why I took AP Calc, normally a senior-only class, last year. Think I was the first kid in my school in...4 years to take that as a junior. Same with AP Physics. I was sort of sick of getting rejected by potential astro mentors in 10th grade since I had no physics background, so that summer I took a physics course at the local CC that let my school put me in AP Physics B (which has always been a senior-only class at my school since most people can't take regular physics, a prerequisite, until junior year). Since I'm pretty much done with the math my school offers, I'm taking Calc II and then Multivariable Calc at the same CC.

Thats good summer wages! Did you do any community service?? Travel, etc?? All of that stuff, called your personal profile plays a role in the admissions decision!

Good Luck!

habdragon--no clue :) weighted is what appears on my transcript.

evan--Very little community service, sadly, lol. I do travel...fairly extensively, but I don't think I mentioned it on my application, except for this past summer...(I went to Israel for 2 weeks to visit family). With the exception of 2002-2004ish, I've been to Israel for 2-3 weeks every year since...well, since I was born, lol. And travel in addition to that that I haven't mentioned...hm...and, thanks!!! :)

And that's pretty crazy, with the divide-by-4 thing! I see people with, like, 4.6 GPAs which would correspond, I guess, to a 115 weighted average, when at my school (5 pt for AP, 2 pt for honors) the highest possible average can't be more than 101, 102. lol weird stuff...

That divide by four thing isn't very accurate at all for the reason you stated.. And since an A is usually regarded as a 94 or above (90 here), the 4.0 would start at the lowest grade that would recieve an A... So divide by four isn't correct.

I hope you included the abstract of your article with your applications as supplement materials - if not, send it as an update when around the time your midyear grades come out.

IMO, you should have multiple acceptances, but I can't predict if Harvard will be one of them or not. As you have mentioned, your class rank isn't all that spectacular - but if they need want a published astronomer to round out their class, you have a good shot.

Thanks, both of you! I actually included the full paper. The version I sent to Siemens (well, an improved version of it), not an extremely technical paper like the one that will go to publication, but good anyway ;) The astronomy department there knows me, I've met a couple of times with the undergraduate tutor of the astro concentration and once to discuss research opportunities with a professor there who's doing similar work to mine. I hope you're right about the astronomer thing. I hate to sound cocky, but in terms of HS students doing astronomy research, I'm probably quite near the top.......Siemens at least helped confirm that for me...

Recommendations, by the way, were from my AP English and journalism teacher from last year, my science research teacher, and my mentor. I tried with both the recommendations and the essays to paint myself as someone with a strong passion and dedication to astro who enjoys other things. Clich

Excellent. Only a week to wait! Not even a blink in astronomical time.

You really dont look at weighted GPA to judge an applicant's chances, except at UCs, which Im not sure how they handle numerical grades. You judge an applicant by their unweighted, which would give you how well they perform regardless of classes. Then you look at how hard their schedule was in relation to what is offered. Weighted GPA's are so different wherever you go, they really dont mean anything. Its simply meant to provide a school with a system to rank students, giving extra weight for harder classes.

hey adam! haha..its desh..ur kidding rite..ur in everywhere no sweat..nice stats btw

It would be helpful if you calculated your unweighted GPA on a 4.0 scale. The divide by 4 thing is not right. Write down what final grade you got in each class, each semester, where 90-100=A, 80-89.9=B, etc. For all As you have, add 4, for all Bs add 3, all Cs add 2. Divide the number you get by the total number of semesters of classes you took.

how come nothing guitar related is on ur EC's? just wondering cuz i play guitar and one of my main EC's was related to guitar

Sols, you got this one in the bag baby. I know Harvard is picky, but you definitely stand out bro. I'll be celebrating next week, either for you or with you, but I simply think there isn't much of a question here.

Wayne! Desh! haha wow, this site is amazing, one day and already I'm finding familiar people. Nice ;)

Salank--I don't think I mentioned it (it might have come up somewhere), but I'll try to mention it at my interview this weekend...

Hmm, I hate to bump, but this is sinking to the bottom quickly and I'm curious to see what people think so...bump :p
