Uniquely Problematic GPA - Chances?

Didn’t want to post this in the “chances” section (even though it kind of is just me asking about my chances) because it’s also a question about my weird GPA…

I moved from a really well-known private international school in London to a Northern Virginia public school at the beginning of my junior year, and the GPA weighting systems/ranking systems are completely different, along with different AP offerings. Despite the fact that I moved from a school that does not weight honors/AP classes to a school that DOES, my new school will not weight any of the honors classes from my previous school, making my GPA look artificially lower compared to everyone else at my new school, and forcing my rank to drop tremendously. I’m hovering around the 10% mark right now (out of something like 560 kids), but if my previous classes had been weighted, I’d be somewhere around the 3 or 4% mark…

With that weird situation in mind, what do you think my chances are at Brown, regular decision for International Relations/Economics?

SAT: 2280 R 800 M 740 W 740

SAT II: 780 US History, 800 French, 740 World History

GPA (when I submit apps): 4.1 Weighted, 3.75 Unweighted (upward grade trend; sophomore slump, but straight A’s by senior year)

APs: French (5), Environmental Science (5), English Lang (5), US History (5)

Senior Course Load: AP Lit, AP Physics C: Mechanics (double block), AP CoGo, AP HuG, AP Calc BC, Advanced Band

Teacher Recs: Both from teachers who absolutely adored me, and whose recs have gotten several students into Harvard, Yale, Columbia, and UChicago.

Essays: I know literally everyone puts it like this, but I’d say they’re some of the best essays I’ve seen… Writing is a passion and one of my talents, and I put a lot of work into this. A lot of work.

ECs: Theatre (9th-10th, 5 productions; had to stop because new school doesn’t have a theatre program), MUN (11th-12th, USG for Personnel 12th grade, USG for GAs at my school’s MUN conference, several best delegate awards, including one at a college conference), Gay-Straight Alliance (9th-12th, Co-President 10th grade, Founder 11th grade at my new school, President 12th grade, set up a scholarship fund for LGBTQ students at my school), Boy Scouts (6th-10th, Eagle Scout, Patrol Leader Twice), School’s Magnate Program (11th-12th, Senior Representative for the student board), Academic Team (11th-12th, Qualified for Regional competition 11th and 12th), Concert Band (6th-12th, Alto and Tenor Saxophone), Lacrosse (Varsity Manager 11th-12th), Satire News Network (10th, Co-Presenter and Co-Head Writer), NHS (12th), French National Honor Society (11th-12th, President 12th)

Awards: National Merit Semi-Finalist (at time of college applications)

Service/Summer Programs: 2 week community partnership trip to Cape Town and Port Elizabeth (worked with the Desmond Tutu HIV Foundation Youth Center in Cape Town, and the Ubuntu Education Fund in Port Elizabeth; April 2013), High School Diplomats Program at Princeton University (Cultural exchange summer program with students from Japan, selected from applicants nationwide; July/August 2014), International Thespian Festival at University of Nebraska - Lincoln (Week-long program learning about theatre, taking classes, and auditioning for college programs; attended July 2013 and July 2014)

Hooks: Gay? Not really a hook… I lived in the UK for 4 years, so that could be a bit of a boost.

Yep I think that’s just about everything? My current high school isn’t super well-known, but like most schools in Northern Virginia, it’s considerably better than the vast majority of public high schools in the United States.

Thanks for the help everyone :)>-

bump

Couldn’t you have your counselor explain the GPA problem to them? If not, couldn’t you explain it in the “additional info” section of the Common App. I don’t think your problem is too atypical (transferring to a different gpa scale), so I dont think they would be shocked

I would not consider this a GPA “problem,” or particularly unique. Plenty of students have transferred in their high school career, and they do just fine in college admissions. Brown will be sent your whole transcript, and will see that you received no weighting on the earlier grades.
