Hi.
I am an incoming freshman and was assigned Unit 1 Mini Suite double.
Did anyone else here get Unit One Mini Suite housing?
What are the pros/cons of living in a mini suite freshman year.
Also how does the roommate pairing process work (I requested a roommate)
Thanks.

i lived in a unit 1 minisuite double last year. i am a sophomore, but my roommate was a freshman. i think minisuite double is the best of both worlds. you will get your own bathroom, with whom you will only share with your roommate and your suitemates (2 of them). it is usually a little more quiet than the usual double rooms, but it’s nice to have quiet when you need it. and you can still make lots of friends, as long as you take the initiative. the room is really big, and you get awesome chairs. the only con would be that it is a little pricey, but what isn’t pricey nowadays?

as for your roommate, you usually get who you requested. and you will find out sometime in august.

Woot, a fellow unit 1 minisuite buddy. hrhcow how are the halls located outside of the suite? Is it just like a normal dorm in that there will be other suites across the hall and to your left and right?

Yeah, it’s just like that, though I’d say the suites are spaced farther apart than rooms, since they’re considerably bigger. My girlfriend lived in one last year and is going to again next year, they’re really nice. You’re lucky to have gotten one as a freshman.

That’s strange, I thought that minsuites were always reserved for upper classmen.

Not always. It’s mostly junior transfers but there are a sprinkling of under classmen. According to my girlfriend she got it because although they don’t say it, apparently RCSA people always get their first choice housing. I know of a few non-RCSA under classmen there too though so I’m thinking they can’t always fill them.

Yeah, from what I heard, those award-winners always get what they want. I thought it was openly stated, not just blatantly obvious.

I got one but I’m thinking of changing to a normal double

Psh, award winners do not always get what they want. I requested a mini-suite in Unit 1 and didn’t get it. Got my second choice though! :)

it depends. some halls get more upper-classmen… i got a hall that was like 90% freshmen.

Hopefully I get a freshman hall

fyi i got it and im not a regent scholar lol.

Lucky you, freshmen in a double mini-suite.

I’ll give some input. When I went to OHP, I got paired up with a freshman who also had a unit 1 double mini-suite. He said that he had a friend who got into the mini-suite and chose him as his roommate. His friend got it through some program, I forgot which. Anyway, later, his friend decided to go to another college, but he still got the room. That’s how he got the room.

As for the room, it was quite nice and spacious compared to normal rooms. They also get their own chairs, lol. The walls were made of concrete; it was pretty sound proof… and signal proof. Cellphone signal was terrible, and so was wifi signal, so they used ethernet for internet.

They got a large tackboard too.

The bathroom is just a bathroom. Looks worse than a bathroom in a typical house, but it’s your own bathroom.

You will share it with 3 other people. 1 is your roomate, 2 others are your suitemates.

He said that although the room is nice, the negatives is the social life. It wasn’t too lively there. It’s more difficult to make friends because it’s mostly for upper classmen, and they don’t really want to associate with freshmen.

Yeah I will say that about the mini-suites, I get ZERO signal with AT&T. None whatsoever. My gf has Verizon and it’s fine but apparently AT&T is out of the loop on that one.

Son had mini-suite last year, and Yon is right about the lack of reception with AT&T. For that reason, bringing a land-line phone to hook up to the jack is essential. Although you can only make outgoing local calls on it, you can receive calls from anywhere. You’re paying for it, so you might as well use it.

Mini-suites have 2 + 2 and 2 + 3 options – meaning two doubles or one double and one triple connected with one bathroom and a little hallway between the two rooms and the bathroom. The rooms are huge – bigger than any other dorm room on campus, maybe except for Clark Kerr.

They’re as social as you want them to be. Unit 1 (Christian Hall) mini suites have the African American Theme Program (I believe on the 5th floor), lots of activities. There’s a study room and a lounge on each floor.

Most of the students in mini-suites are second year and first year, not upper division. Housing is guaranteed only two years.

Hey fellow unit one-er!

That’s pretty schweet that you’re staying in the mini-suites in unit one as a freshman, they’re hella hard to get. That being said, there’s a reason why freshman don’t get them… they’re too great haha.

You get all the social aspects of dorm life but you still have a giant room that seems more home-y. The only con is the price and that they’re a little secluded. BUT!
If you join the unit one facebook group, you’ll have no problem meeting people:

I hate you people lol. I had Unit 1 Mini Suite as my first pick, but got put in a Unit 2 triple instead

I got a unit 1 minisuite (double) !!!
I hope my social life won’t die.

I also got a unit 1 mini suite…ahhhh damnit if the signal sucks for AT&T then i’m screwed…=/

I switched from Unit 1 mini suite to Unit 1 Triple
