Units and Financial Aid distribution

hi CC-ers,
my friend registered for over 12 units this quarter
but the problem is that he dropped a class (took a W)
and now is below 12 units.

He attends UCLA--does that affect financial aid in any way?
Thank you

He needs to ask the financial aid office at UCLA about this one.

Agreed…ask UCLA. I believe if he had a Pell grant, these are prorated based on credits. I’m not sure what happens if you drop below full time, but it’s possible he would have to repay what he got for full time based on the prorated Pell rate.

If he got a Cal Grant that might also be affected. He needs to call his school. Kids shouldn’t drop classes without finding out if there’s ramifications.

It all depends on the school’s “lock date” for financial aid. Where I worked, tuition refunds were not given after a certain point in time (2 weeks). At that time, financial aid was also locked. You still had to pay if even if you dropped the class, so aid stayed with you. On the flip side, if you added a class after the lock date, you wouldn’t get to use those extra hours to qualify for more aid. (And dropping all classes is a different story - that can prompt repayment due to the R2T4 calculations)

Even if your friend doesn’t lose any aid, he needs to be careful about withdrawing … all students should be aware that the requirements to continue to receive financial aid have been tightened up this year. Dropping here & there shouldn’t hurt a student, but a pattern of dropping classes can lead to problems with keeping aid in the future. See your school’s financial aid office for their SAP policy.
