Ive heard that Urbana has CS in both their engineering school as well as their arts and sciences school. On their site they imply that the CS in ENG school is much harder to get into. However, im planning on applying to the LAS school for a CS major.
Chance me?

SAT I: 640M, 640CR, 630WR
700M, 590CR, 610WR
GPA: 4.0 UW, 4.3 W
Rank: ~ top 5%
ECs: NHS
SNHS
Mu Alpha Theta
Varsity Math Team
Red Cross Club
Ethnicity: Asian
State: Maryland

There are Math & Computer Sci as well as Stat & Computer Sci in LAS.

yes I am applying for Math & Comp sci., I just don’t wanna risk applying to the Engineering CS bc I will probably get denied to the school overall.

I don’t know much about this school, but top 5% of your class is great, and EC’s are good…raise SAT if you can?

@151Andrew151 yes im taking practice ACTs and I get 29… which is basically what I got on SAT if converted.

Yes you have a good shot of getting in the LAS school. Honestly, I’d recommend just applying to the COE because even if you get rejected from that you have the option of enrolling in the LAS school.

@QuadMaster oh really? I heard they rarely look at your second option if you don’t get into the first one…and I want to apply EA for LAS.

@IDontKnow4 Majority kids at my school who get rejected from the COE tend to get accepted into the LAS, and their stats are very similar to yours. Though I live in Illinois so that might be an important factor in their acceptances.

@QuadMaster oh alright… thanks for that information!

The admission stat is more depending on your intended major than the school. Some majors in LAS (e.g. ChBE) is just as competitive as any engineering. Nevertheless, they would offer you General Studies (undecided major) if you do meet their admission criteria but not strong enough for your intended major. You may apply to that major again as sophomore but it may still be competitive depending on your freshmen performance.

@billcsho o ok… do you think LAS CS would be easier based on my stats. You have commented on my other posts so I assume you know my stats.

@IDontKnow4 I am not sure about the admission stat of these 2 CS programs at LAS, but I guess they may be a little bit less competitive than the CS in Engineering. CR+M at 1290 (or even 1340 though they don’t superscore) is a bit weak for oos applicant. It is not impossible though. I still think Purdue would be a better match (high match) for you and it is just a couple hours away from UIUC. Also, UIUC really sucks in financial aid to oos students. It may cost you $40k+ out of your pocket per year.
