Univ Maryland-College Park: Bad area?

I have heard many times that the area around UMaryland-CP is quite scary and dangerous. Is this true?

Lots of kids from my area go to UM-CP. Some commute, some live on campus, some life off campus in the College Park area. I haven't heard any complaints about it yet.

Scariness is relative. Where are you from? What are your other options? Who is scared - you or your parents?

Can you visit and check it out yourself?

College Park is definitely not a bad area. Students who live in College park itself feel pretty safe. There are some sketchy neighborhoods within a few miles of College Park closer to DC. It pays to be careful no matter where you live.

I wouldn't be concerned.

The CP campus is beautiful. Areas not far off campus are definitely sketchy. There is definitely some crime that happens on campus, but most of my friends who go there seem to feel very safe.

There is crime on every campus. Most of it is alcohol and theft. Maryland is no higher than other schools its size. You can get crime statistics from the IPEDS website

It's suburban, and highly diverse. The areas just outside the school are mostly lower middle class suburban, and commercial- lots of individual businesses strung along busy streets. I personally have no problem with it and live quite close. I would say that the area is moving upward, not downward- fairly new Ikea plaza close by with upscale retailers and restaurants, new condos and nice apartments being built, etc.

Isn't Maryland an overwhelmingly commuter school. I believe there are not many dorms on campus. Please correct me if i'm wrong.

Maryland is primarily residential and has residence halls for about 8500 students and university apartments for about 3000. The rest live in non-university apartments or nearby houses.

It is very much a residential campus. We are looking at it for my daughter, my husband and I share the concern about safety. His territory for his job is in that area, so he has been driving through periodically to check it out. It has some sketchiness, but not overwhelming. Our daughter would need to be coached on being more aware of her surroundings, travelling in groups. Others I know who went there felt safe when attending.

I stand corrected. :-)

While there's affordable options nearby, there's many many commuters.
