Univ. of Florida: "Public Ivy"?

The Gators seem to derive their self-worth from this needy term. Should we give them a pass or what?

No. Just like tufts isn’t a “new ivy”

Plus UF isn’t exactly one of the best state schools

What is the point of your post curiouslee…are you just being spiteful?

Here is a link to the reference…berate it all you want if it makes you feel better.

[Amazon.com: The Public Ivies: America’s Flagship Public Universities (9780060934590): Howard Greene, Matthew W. Greene: Books](http://www.amazon.com/Public-Ivies-Americas-Flagship-Universities/dp/006093459X#reader)

If I were writing a book about “public ivies,” I’d include as many 2nd and 3rd tier state schools as possible. That way more and more suckers will buy my book!

So apparently you at least admit there is a published reference to UF being a public ivy.

How is your original post constructive? At this point, can we assume you have some sort of axe to grind?

The only state schools that deserve that title are UVA ucla Berkeley unc William and Mary and Michigan

There’s only ONE Ivy League and it’s an athletic conference of universities. A conference of elite and excellent universities that have similar traditions, but nothing more and nothing less.

I’ll take the Big Ten over the Ivy League anyday, but that’s a whole 'nother topic.

^
Exactly LakeSuperior. The schools that make up the Ivy League are pretty much an entirely different kind of school compared to publics. IMO, I prefer the large research state flagship and I hate to say it, but I think I’d pick a school like UMich, UVA, or UNC over Harvard, Yale, or Brown. Therefore I don’t find it fitting that they refer to any publics as “Ivies.” They should just leave the two types of schools seperated. There are top notch smaller private universities and then there are the top notch large public universities.

Nevertheless, people actually given the choice will overwhelmingly go Ivy over Big Ten and top public schools.

^ Agreed. Right or wrong, most of the time people given the choice will choose Ivy’s.

rogracer: my bet is that curiouslee was rejected by Florida and is now a frustrated, self-loathing Seminole. That said, having gone to Harvard and Florida, I view this “Ivy” thing as an innocent, harmless distraction for some folks.

curiouslee is practically the worst poster on CC. Who cares if a school is an “Ivy”?

UF does have a case: About $600 million a year in research expenditures, over 100 ranked graduate & professional programs, one of the strongest alumni-bases in the Southeast, a 36% acceptance rate for First Time in College Freshmen, A Top-10 Yield Rate for all colleges/universities in the United States, and not to mention the best athletic department in the country.

Oh ya, UF has also raised close to a billion dollars in just under 3 years.

What are UF’s strong programs? Why do they deserve to gain a national academic reputation?

"Why do they deserve to gain a national academic reputation? "

They already have one…

Silly Florida homer. Only HYPSM deserve a national academic reputation. Everyone else who tries is inferior. You should be ashamed of yourself for going to a former slave run institution. And one that tires to excel in sports, oh my!!!

No, he is just doing us all a favor. If you don’t get into HYSPM, you might as well not go to college at all. Especially ones that are good at sports and lower admission standards for jocks.

University of Florida is a great public school. It really is, BUT I really don’t understand why so many of the alums feel the need to constantly beat their chest and shout out their supposed academic excellence. There are many superior public schools (University of Washington, University of Wisconsin, UIUC) whose alums/fans/students aren’t constantly touting their “public ivy” status as loudly. I guess it comes from the fact that most people in the south consider Florida to be more on par with the University of Georgia rather than with schools like UVA creating some feelings of insecurity.

Typical gator wannabee statement. Sheesh. Couldn’t get into FSU, had to settle for UF, now acting out on the web.

somehow i think i can guess curiouslee’s race…
