Both are great schools. If the money difference is funds you’d borrow or funds your family could use for other needs, like a sibling’s college, Pitt for sure. If you can comfortably afford both, let her choose. Has she visited each?
The cheapest one. Nursing isn’t a prestige-obsessed field. If costs are about the same, the one she likes most. Pitt Nursing is high up there is UMich is one of the top publics so you can’t go wrong.
Michigan since you are instate.
Where does she want to work post-graduation? Like someone mentioned, employers probably won’t distinguish either school for nursing.
Yes, she’s visited both and will have a manadatory visit to Pitt coming up for the scholarship consideration.
Part of the Pitt scholarship is guaranteed position in the hospital where she will need to work for 3 years. The hospital is in top 10 in country.
^^^^Michigan’s hospital is top ten as well.
If Pitt is significantly less as a result of the scholarship, then Pitt. Otherwise the school she likes better. Both are excellent programs. Pitt is a popular choice among my son’s friends who are Philly city kids and they all seem to be very happy there.
If the CoA favors Michigan, I would go there. If the CoA favors Pitt, I would go to Pitt. If the CoA is roughly the same, I would go with the curriculum and program that she feels suits her best.
Saying close to home is a bit cheaper and more convenient. I’d carefully check the scholarship parameters in case it takes more than 4 years to complete her degree.
Thanks everyone. My gut says she will do well at both but for personal growth being away from home will help her. Pitt is offering a full ride that could include room and board and Michigan isn’t offering anything…yet.
When you have both financial aid packages, run the numbers here: http://www.finaid.org/calculators/awardletter.phtml Don’t forget to include your own best estimates for costs of travel. And be sure to find out what would happen to the scholarship money if she changes her major, or her grades drop. Some scholarships have minimum GPA requirements to keep them.
Melgaye, unless you live in Ann Arbor, and intend on her living at home while commuting to class, it does not make a difference whether she goes to college at Michigan or Pitt. We are not talking about Paris or Tokyo, where your daughter will get to experience a totally different culture and language. The Pitt and Detroit metropolitan areas have very similar demographics and cultures. As long as she lives on her own, she will get the personal growth, whether at Michigan or Pitt.
That being said, Michigan costs $15k/year for a state resident. As such, Pitt will be at least $60k cheaper over 4 years. If Pitt includes R&B, we are looking at an extra $10-$20k savings. Unless Michigan gives you a counteroffer, I would say Pitt makes better financial sense.
