Univeristy of Connecticut vs. CUNY Baruch

I plan to double major in Finance and Marketing. I live in Queens, NY and obviously Baruch would be a lot cheaper. With financial aid, I get a free ride to Baruch and maybe some money left over. UConn offers me $18,000 in grants and scholarships and the rest of their tuition($38,000 including fees and room/board) in loans. I want to know if it's worth coming out of college $80,000 in debt to go away, experience college at its fullest, and get possibly a better education.

I also plan to visit UConn April 16th during their open house. Is it possible to ask for more money if I really want to go? And if so, how much more do you think they would give me?

While I can’t answer your question about uConn giving you more money, I’d say that Baruch is still a good deal for its price. Unless your main desire is to get away from your parents by leaving yourself in debt, I’d say sacrifice it and go to Baruch. You also mentioned that you are likely to get full TAP/Pell (I assume). If you’re going to have leftover money, and you want to get out of the house, might as well get a job and move out, if you really want to. I just don’t think $80k is worth it.

Apart from that, I believe they are both good schools.

Thanks for your response. Moving out would be a great option if rent in the city wasn’t so high! Haha.

I was also wondering if anyone knows is financial aid will cover dorming at Baruch even though I’m a NYC resident. Like if on my fafsa I choose “living on campus,” will they give me enough aid to cover dorming costs?

TAP/Pell has its limits (I think they’ve lowered the total of both by a few hundred, but don’t depend on my answer). They won’t give you more than that, but talk to the school directly about those kinds of questions. I don’t dorm; I walk to school. I can’t help you there :(

I live in Queens as well. I definitely can see why you would want to dorm there because of first hand experience with the MTA, haha. Aren’t those so-called “advertisements” a load of bull?

Haha, it is a load of bull.

Hey, I was wondering if you actually go to Baruch or any other CUNY school? A lot of my friends tell me honor kids have class with regular students and that it’s a lot like high school. What do you think?

I am currently attending Queens. It’s not the same as high school unless you find and make friends with those people who still act as though they’re I’m high school. Because most of the CUNY schools are filled with those that live nearby, you won’t find much between high school and college life except for the academics.

I took chemistry last semester and I noticed that a kid in front me was editing his resume (no, I didn’t intend to snoop into his business). At the top where he listed his education, I noticed he was in Macauley’s Honors (I think that’s how you spell it) and had a 4.0 GPA, and was a junior. I think he chose to be in the regular chemistry class though it appears he was clearly qualified for the honors class. The point is, if your grades are high enough, then you have the option of registering for either the regular or advanced class. I suppose he chose the regular to keep his grades high.
